Telefónica has presented the 5G Technological Cities project which will mean the first deployment of 5G capabilities in the cities of Segovia and Talavera de la Reina, in collaboration with Nokia y Ericsson.

Telefónica will convert both cities into a living laboratory for the next three years (2018-2020) with pioneering proposals, from the first capabilities of the fifth mobile generation to the deployment of the new 5G network and the development of use cases that will allow citizens and companies to enjoy the advantages of this technology.

Specifically, the new mobile generation will make it possible to increase speed until obtaining peaks from one to 10Gbps (more than three times the current speed of fiber in the home) and reduce latency to a minimum of between one and five milliseconds, in addition to having high capacity, with the possibility of having up to 100 times more connected devices.

In this way, the citizens of Segovia and Talavera de la Reina will have the possibility of enjoying the network improvements with priority, since it will be deployed throughout the urban core, so that both cities will advance towards digitalization, with the advantages that this implies both for their citizens and for the development of various sectors.

Nokia and Ericsson, technological partners

In the project to deploy the 5G network in these two cities, Telefónica has Nokia (Segovia) and Ericsson (Talavera de la Reina) as technological partners. Ericsson is promoting the standardization of 5G and has already consolidated some large contracts that place it at the forefront of the future mobile generation. In turn, Nokia, also a key contributor to standardization, has an end-to-end portfolio and 5G technology, based on the Finnish company's standard, which will be compatible with a wide range of future 5G devices and services, positioning the company at the forefront of 5G commercialization.

En paralelo al despliegue tecnológico, se desarrollarán 5G use cases with proofs of concept of the new services, products, experiences and business models that will be possible thanks to this technology and the advantages of increased bandwidth or decreased latency that it provides.

The president of Telefónica Spain, Luis Miguél Gilpérez, participated in the presentation of this project; José Antonio López, president of Ericsson Spain; Álvaro Sánchez, director of the Telefónica Spain account at Nokia, and Joaquín Mata, director of Operations, Network and IT at Telefónica España.

Luis Miguel Gilpérez, president of Telefónica Spain, highlighted that "with 5G Technological Cities, Telefónica makes the technology of the future a reality, always at the service of people. To achieve this, we will develop technological deployment and use cases in parallel, so that we will put new technologies at the service of people, one of Telefónica's clear objectives."

For his part, José Antonio López, president of Ericsson Spain, pointed out that "5G technology will have a huge impact on the user experience and the digital transformation of cities and industries. Ericsson already works with more than 35 partners in the world to develop use cases that prepare the connected cities of the future, among the most important in Spain are those related to tourism, which we have worked with FITUR and that we are demonstrating these days. This project, in which we are pleased to collaborate with Telefónica and the City Council of Talavera de la Reina, where the promotion of tourism will be one of the protagonists, will demonstrate the contribution to economic growth and the benefits that Spaniards will enjoy thanks to 5G.”

Finally, Álvaro Sánchez, director of the Telefónica Spain account at Nokia, stated that the most relevant thing about 5G is "the possibilities that it will offer to society and the different sectors of the industry in their digital transformation, enabling this diversity of new applications, many of which are yet to be imagined. Projects like the one that Telefónica presents here today are a magnificent opportunity for all parties to advance on the path towards the consolidation of the digital revolution."
