With an eye on the Oscars, 'Roma' wins the Goya for best Ibero-American film
Alfonso Cuarón's film manages to prevail over 'The Night of 12 Years' (Uruguay), 'The Dogs' (Chile) and 'The Angel' (Argentina).
Roma, from the Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron, has won the award Goya for the best Ibero-American film, thus ousting the other candidates: The night of 12 years (Uruguay), The dogs (Chile) and The angel (Argentina).
Previously, on January 22, the Hollywood Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that the Mexican film cwill compete in the next edition of the Oscars in ten categories: best film, direction, leading actress (Yalitza Aparicio), supporting actress (Marina de Tavira), original screenplay, sound mixing, sound editing, foreign film, photography and production design.
The film has also won two awards, one for best director and another for best foreign-language film, at the last Golden Globe Awards, as well as the Golden Lion in Venice.
The producers of Rome, Gabriela Rodríguez and Nicolás Celís, have expressed on behalf of the director, Alfonso Cuarón, their gratitude for the Goya to both the academics and Netflix for bringing “this film to the entire world.”
"It seems that it has become evident that platforms and the world of cinema can exist. In our case, we achieved it with an exhibition in cinemas around the world while taking advantage of the benefits of the platform that has given us the possibility that millions of people can see the film. Otherwise they would never have access to it and Netflix reaches homes or communities where there is no cinema or where only blockbusters or action films are shown," Gabriela Rodríguez acknowledges to Panorama Audiovisual.
For his part, Nicolás Celís, emphasizes that Roma has shown how a film can be in theaters around the world for more than ten weeks, in 70 mm, with Atmos sound... at the same time as on Netflix. Without a doubt, both forms of distribution are not in conflict.”
