DW makes the leap to future-oriented production by leveraging Sony technology to create efficient, automated and cross-functional workflows

German wave

In collaboration with the integrator Qvest Media, Sony is facilitating the German broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW) the news and program production system Media Backbone Hive.

By integrating Sony's Media Backbone Hive into its production sites in Berlin and Bonn, DW is in the midst of a gradual transition to new highly efficient production workflows.

German waveDue to its open API interfaces, the system is based on the backbone of the future-oriented production platform, which makes efficient and automated systemic workflows possible. Through private data centers, both Hive digital centers collectively enable more than a thousand journalists from both locations to produce news remotely in real time.

These days, audiences consume content online, rather than through linear channels. For this reason, flexibility is becoming increasingly essential among news producers seeking to distribute content quickly and efficiently. Accelerated delivery and simplified production are the keys to success for modern networks and media companies. Sony's Hive serves as a multimedia asset management (MAM) through a web editor and Adobe Premiere to provide DW with the tools needed to thrive in today's frenetic digital ecosystem.

Thomas Schäfer, project manager at Deutsche Welle, comments that "with Hive, our editors not only have more freedom when producing news; they can now also obtain a final product faster. Being able to record stories directly with their mobile or tablet is another particularly positive development."

Media Backbone Hive is part of Sony's Intelligent Media Services, a portfolio of open technologies and services that allows its customers to capture, manage and deliver content, and add value at every phase of a project.

Stuart Almond, head of Intelligent Media Services at Sony Professional Europe, acknowledges that “we are proud that Qvest Media has chosen our innovative Hive technology for DW and that, together, we are shaping the future of television production.”

"Hive responds perfectly to today's digital trends, and is fully configurable. This makes Sony Professional an ideal partner for production companies, whether large or small," he adds.
