EVS Overcam wins IABM BAM Award at IBC 2019
The new AI-based solution automates key camera positions to deliver additional sports coverage at a lower cost.
The new system of camera automation based on artificial intelligence of EVS, Overcam, has won the award IABM BaM and IBC 2019. The international association of broadcast industry manufacturers, which annually presents these awards, thus grants recognition to EVS in the creation category.
Overcam is a machine learning powered software solution which enables autonomous control of robotic cameras in live sports. Powered by VIA Mind, EVS' artificial intelligence engine that integrates machine learning methods, the new solution uses the “smart tracking” to analyze key game parameters, such as players and ball positions, and directs the cameras to frame the scene. Due to the system's real-time processing, it integrates with existing multi-camera live production workflows, where robotic cameras can be mixed with handheld cameras to enhance storytelling capabilities.
Overcam has been developed to allow content owners create more immersive productions capturing the action from more camera angles more economically. The first application of the solution is for live football, especially smaller leagues where production budgets are tighter, but the system can ultimately be used for other sports such as basketball and hockey.
Johan Vounckx, Senior Vice President of Innovation and Technology at EVS, highlighted upon hearing the jury's ruling that “there is a lot of excitement within the industry around Overcam and its ability to profitably improve the production of any live production, so we are delighted that our latest innovation has been recognized by the IABM and its illustrious panel of expert judges.”
The BaM Awards are independent and managed by the broadcasting industry's only international trade association, the IABM. They are judged by a panel of more than 40 unaffiliated subject matter experts who look for innovations that offer real benefits for business and creativity.
EVS is demonstrating the award-winning Overcam system at its booth (8.B90) at IBC 2019.
