Italian ViSo Video Solutions uses Ultimatte 12 to create convincing virtual sets

The Italian creative agency ViSo Video Solutions improves its virtual reality studios where it produces programs and spots for clients such as Sky Italia, Mediaset, ESL with Ultimatte 12 and Ursa Broadcast cameras.

The Italian creative agency ViSo Video Solutions has improved his virtual reality studies by trusting the device Ultimatte 12 and the cameras Ursa Broadcast of Blackmagic Design, in order to produce television programs and advertisements for clients such as Sky Italia, Mediaset, ESL and Netco Sports.

The company, founded in 2010, offers virtual reality services, creates all computer graphics and 3D assets in-house, and also provides post-production services, with the editing and grading process performed in-house. DaVinci Resolve Studio.

Luigi Nino, general manager of ViSo, "virtual and augmented reality studios provide many benefits to productions. We chose to develop the entire virtual reality system in our facilities, in order to have maximum control over each aspect, and customize the material, lighting, animations and effects according to the specific needs of each client."

The set of virtual reality studio is 130 square meters and uses different Ursa Broadcast cameras mounted on a tripod, as well as a telescopic arm installed on a travelin, on a 6-meter rail. The audiovisual mixing is carried out with a ATEM 1 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, connected to a device ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel.

"By having multiple cameras to capture different angles, it is possible to miss some overshoot in the images. However, by having an Ultimatte connected to each one and the correct lighting, we ensure that we always achieve the best possible mask," explains Luigi.

On the other hand, he adds that “we had used Ultimatte before and chose to rely on the Ultimatte 12 version, since it is much better at correcting green overflow in images and creating exclusion masks with great precision.”

Regarding moving computerized objects, Luigi explains that "we have our own program, which fully controls all the 3D and digitized elements of a scene and allows us to edit them. It is possible to view them in real time and, if something needs to be changed, we can import the models, preview them, move them, enlarge or shrink them, or whatever we wantc.

Once they decide on the final aesthetic of a scene, that is locked in and can now be recorded with the help of the Ultimatte.

“One of my favorite examples is ESL Italy's bi-weekly variety show, known as House of Esports, televised by DMAX HD. There is the host and the guests in the game being analyzed, who then have the opportunity to get up and walk around the set, which looks great. The scene is full of characters, effects and animations with elements both in the background and foreground, in order to create a totally realistic virtual set,” he adds.

Luigi concludes by stating that "since Blackmagic Design acquired Ultimatte, I have been amazed by the improvements made to this already fantastic composer. When combined with other equipment in the company, we now have a complete workflow to capture and control content at an incredible price, which guarantees that we meet our objectives in terms of quality."
