DJI Ronin 4D arrives, cinematic system with 4-axis stabilization

The new DJI Ronin 4D combines the full-frame Zenmuse

DJI's latest comprehensive solution is described by the company itself as its “most powerful cinematic imaging platform to date.” A proprietary chipset powers an intelligent image processing system, CineCore 3.0, which offers an internal 8K RAW codec with color reproduction, advanced support functions with a high-performance AI engine, and multi-link monitoring and control with low-latency image processing.

As a complement to the imaging system, a new camera has been incorporated gimbal Zenmuse X9 Full frame - available in 8K y 6K. In addition to the commonly used H.264 codec, both the X9-8K and X9-6K can record internally Apple ProRes y ProRes RAW. La Zenmuse X9-6K supports up to 6K/60fps and 4K/120fps, and Zenmuse X9-8K up to 8K/75fps with over 14 stops of dynamic range, giving creators multiple options for capturing cinema-quality footage.

Even in difficult lighting situations, the Cine Color System DJI Ronin 4D's patented DCCS is primed to deliver natural skin tones and enables “effortless” tonal consistency in a project when using different cinema cameras. Likewise, the nine-stop physical ND filters built into the camera make it easy to adjust to dramatically changing lighting conditions. Additionally, the X9 is equipped with a interchangeable lens mount allowing connection with DJI's own DL mount, Leica M mount and other mounts with short flange focal lengths.

Four-axis stabilization system

The DJI Ronin 4D has been designed with a hey Z active that seeks to eliminate vertical camera shake effectively. This technology allows the operator to record while walking, running or moving dynamically, without the need to practice rhythm or rely on external equipment. In this way, according to DJI, videos taken in complex spaces, such as stairs or uneven terrain, are smooth, “without the operator's steps being perceived.”

The system achieves this fluidity thanks to a new advanced algorithm which processes inputs from a set of ToF sensors, dual visual sensors, integrated IMU and barometer. Even with the new additional Z axis, the DJI Ronin 4D is lighter and smaller “than most cinema cameras mounted on a professional three-axis stabilizer,” according to the firm.

The DJI Ronin 4D is complete with the system ActiveTrack Pro, which takes advantage of the DJI Ronin 4D's artificial intelligence to track subjects from longer distances while adjusting composition to maintain optimal framing.

New LiDAR rangefinder

The DJI Ronin 4D mounts a telemetro LiDAR newly designed, which continuously generates precise laser measurements to deliver a “sharper, faster and more reliable” focusing experience. The solution simultaneously more than 43,200 range points that reach up to 10 meters, locating subjects quickly and accurately, even in low-light environments.

The DJI Cinema System offers three focus modes to suit every creator's needs: manual focus, autofocus, and DJI's Automated Manual Focus (AMF). In manual focus, the DJI Ronin 4D provides LiDAR Waveform, a support tool that allows cinematographers to locate focus points and focus “with extreme precision.”

Stable streaming with O3 Pro

Using new transmission technology O3 Pro from DJI, the 4D System Video Transmitter (with 256-bit AES encryption) is capable of outputting a 1080p/60fps signal to remote monitors with a transmission range of up to almost 6,000 meters. In addition to 2,4 GHz y 5,8 GHz, O3 Pro also supports the frequency band DFS, which DJI says significantly improves stability and anti-interference performance, even in signal-saturated environments and in locations with complex architectural structures. This system also allows for multiple receivers with a single transmitter and allows users to switch power between multiple Ronin 4Ds.

The DJI Ronin 4D can also benefit from a remote monitor 1,500 nits and 7 inches which integrates a wireless video receiver. This equipment has a gyroscopic sensor that enables remote control of the camera based on the operator's movement. The system can also be connected to the handles Ron's 4D, to the steering wheels DJI Master Wheels, to the DJI Force Pro or to the new Follow Focus DJI three-channel

DJI also notes that when multiple remote monitors are used together, each device can play material separately with LUT independent; and that the monitor's built-in microSD card slot supports recording proxy footage up to 1080p/60fps.

Storage, sound, battery and partners

The DJI Ronin 4D offers three storage methods: USB SSD, CFexpress Tipo-B card y 1TB PROSSD, owned by DJI. On the other hand, when it comes to sound recording, the DJI Ronin 4D has built-in microphones to support 2 channel 24 bit audio. It also has two 3.5mm jacks on the body y two XLR ports on the expansion board for additional input and output options.

Like the Ronin 2 and Inspire 2, the DJI Ronin 4D uses the TB50 smart battery, which offers up to 2 and a half hours of recording. According to DJI, the self-heating technology of this battery allows you to shoot in “extreme weather conditions.”

DJI has confirmed that eight photography directors will work with DJI and Ronin 4D on their upcoming jobs. These include Rodney Charters, ASC, CNSC, NZCS; Takuro Ishizaka, JSC; Rachel Morrison, ASC; XiaoShi Zhao, CNSC; and Academy Award winners for Best Cinematography Erik Messerschmidt, ASC; Claudio Miranda, ASC; and Peter Pau, HKSC.

Versions and availability

The DJI Ronin 4D is available in 8K and 6K combinations. The 6K version, available starting in December, includes the main body, a Zenmuse The 8K version, available “later”, features a more powerful Zenmuse X9-8K Gimbal camera and a 1TB PROSSD.

While the basic packages are quite complete, DJI recommends purchasing the el 4D video transmitter, he high brightness remote monitor and the DJI PROSSD 1TB “to exploit its full potential.”
