The Catalan director Carla Simón, author of Summer 1993, becomes the first Spaniard to win a first-class international film festival for Alcarras

Carla Simón's feature film becomes the first Spanish film to achieve recognition in 39 years, since Mario Camus I would get it with The Hive. It is also worth noting that the Galician Lois Patiño and its short The star sower has won third prize in the short film section, which gives it direct access to the European film awards.

Produced by elastic films, Avalon P.C., Vilaüt Films and Alcarràs Film AIE, in co-production by Kino Productions (Italia), Alcarras tells the story of the Solé family, who after eighty years cultivating the same land, reunites to harvest their last harvest together. The film is a drama about perpetual generational tensions, the overcoming of ancient traditions and the importance of unity in times of crisis.

Night Shyamalan, president of the jury, highlights his combination of amaturs actors, the tenderness with which he portrays his characters or his “camera, glued to the earth.” Simón, in statements to RTVE, has stated that he still “does not believe” the award, although he recognizes that it will make him “travel a lot.” “It comes from a very small town, from a very specific area, and, suddenly, we feel that it speaks to everyone,” commented the director, who already won the award for best debut film with Summer 1993 at the 2017 Berlinale.

Alcarras, which will arrive in Spanish cinemas on April 28, will have national distribution of elastic y Avalon D.A. International sales are carried out by the French house MK2.
