Lone Scherfig directs 'The Movie Teller' in Chile

A Contracorriente Films, Selenium Films y Attraction Films have started filming in Chile The movie teller, directed by Lone Scherfig (The kindness of strangers, An education o Italian for beginners).

Starring Bérénice Bejo, Antonio de la Torre, Daniel Brühl, Sara Becker and the young Alondra Valenzuela, the film is the adaptation of the novel of the same name by Hernan Rivera Letelier and tells the captivating story of María Margarita, a young woman who lives in a mining town in the heart of the Atacama Desert in the 1960s and who has the gift of telling movies.

Scherfig highlights that "the extraordinary main cast, Bérénice Bejo, Antonio de la Torre, Daniel Brühl and newcomers Alondra Valenzuela and Sara Becker have given the film a lot of sensitivity, humor, deeply moving moments and great nuance. So have the locations, an entire mining town recreated so that the film takes us back to Chile in the 60s. At one end of the city was the mine, which defined the hard life of the families who "They lived there; at the other end, a huge white cinema, which fed their fantasies, dreams and love life."

“The films that came to the city, from The Apartment until Spartacus, have inspired our cinematographic language, but more importantly, our goal is to do justice to the novel, the script, and a story rooted in reality. This should be a film that its characters, a family of film-loving miners, would want to escape to on a Sunday afternoon,” he adds.

The Danish director achieved international recognition in 2000 with Italian for beginners, for which he won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Festival. In 2009 he directed An education, based on the screenplay by Nick Hornby and starring Cary Mulligan. The film had nine Bafta nominations and three Oscar nominations, including best film. Since then, Scherfig directed the romantic drama One Day (2011) con Anne Hathaway y Jim Sturgess, The Riot Club (2014) y Their Finest (2017), entre otros.

With script Walter Salles (Diarios de motocicleta, Central do Brasil) y Rafa Russo (The year of fury), parte del equipo técnico está formado por Daniel Aranyo (Way Down, Mr Right, Regresión) como director de fotografía, Carlos Conti (motorcycle diaries) en el diseño de producción, Thank you Paloma (The bookstore) en diseño de vestuario y Fernando Velázquez (Lo imposible, Un monstruo viene a verme, Crimson Peak) como responsable de la composición musical.

The story

María Margarita tiene un don muy especial, una habilidad casi asombrosa para volver a contar películas. Su talento y pasión pronto se extiende más allá de su círculo familiar empobrecido para llegar a toda la comunidad. La gente escucha a María Margarita con deleite y diversión, para olvidarse de las duras rutinas en las salitreras.

La historia se desarrolla de la mano de hechos culturales y políticos relevantes en la historia del pueblo, como la llegada y éxito de la exhibición cinematográfica, seguida de su declive con la aparición de la televisión. La película, que refleja los cambios políticos acontecidos en las épocas de Frei, Allende y la llegada de Pinochet, revive la decadencia de los históricos pueblos mineros del salitre en el norte de Chile y revela los recuerdos incalculables enterrados profundamente en nuestras raíces históricas; se nos enseña cómo todos los sueños y esperanzas de la gente común están finalmente sujetos a la tiranía del destino.

The producers

El film está producido por A Contracorriente Films, Selenium Films, Altiro Films y Contadora Films AIE. Cuenta con la colaboración del ICAA, ICEC, Programa Ibermedia, la participación de RTVE, TVC, HBOMax, Euskaltel-Telecable y será distribuida por A Contracorriente Films. El rodaje se extenderá hasta el 13 de mayo en localizaciones del desierto de Atacama en Chile. Las ventas internacionales corren a cargo de Embankment Films y Latido Films.
