HBO Max’s ‘Love and Baseball’ rounded and finished with Blackmagic Design

La mayoría de escenas de Love and Baseball se filmaron con una cámara cinematográfica digital Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 4.6K llevando a cabo también el ajuste cromático del material grabado con DaVinci Resolve Studio.

Basada en la obra de teatro homónima de Jerry Montoya, Love and Baseball narra la historia de Will (Max Arciniega) y Michele (Tate Hanyok). Tras un encuentro casual, surge una gran atracción entre ellos, pero deberán enfrentarse a lo inoportuno del momento y las realidades de la vida para intentar encontrar el amor nuevamente. La película fue dirigida por Steve Acevedo, quien también se desempeñó como responsable de fotografía junto con Joseph Hernandez y Andrés Solorzano.

Love and Baseball It consists of three acts, between which two years pass. In order to differentiate them visually, Acevedo decided to have them filmed by three different directors of photography, according to their own styles. To record the first and third acts, the model was used URSA Mini Pro 4.6K.

“Andrés Solórzano filmed the first act mainly with the camera on a kickstand and a slider, in order to obtain balanced and precise images that reflected the aspirations of traditional romantic comedies,” Acevedo highlights. "On the other hand, Joseph Hernandez used a stabilizing medium for the second act. I recorded the third and gave it a handheld documentary look, so that the ending conveyed a feeling of realism and authenticity," he adds.

Acevedo opted for the URSA Mini Pro 4.6K model for the third act. However, he allowed each cinematographer to use their own equipment. Solórzano decided to use the same camera as Acevedo. “I love this model,” admits Acevedo. "I use it quite a bit in my documentaries. We didn't have a film crew for the first or third act, so it was important to use a camera that was easy to operate. In this sense, the URSA Mini Pro model turned out to be ideal."

“I like the functionality the camera offers,” says Acevedo. "The size, menus and controls make it easy to use, especially when you're working quickly and without much help. It's light and balanced. The electronic viewfinder is great too, and the images you get look great."

En este caso, no era fundamental que los tres actos tuvieran la misma apariencia, ya que el estilo de cada uno era distinto. Sin embargo, Acevedo quedó satisfecho con la calidad del material grabado, en comparación con otras cámaras más costosas. “Siempre me han gustado mucho las imágenes que se consiguen con las cámaras de Blackmagic, incluso desde los primeros modelos Blackmagic Cinema Camera. El material grabado con el modelo URSA Mini Pro presenta una atenuación agradable en los bordes y luce natural”, indicó.

Calibrations

Los coloristas John Nodilo y Arianna Shining Star etalonaron la película en DaVinci Resolve Studio. Acevedo quería definir cada acto no solo mediante un estilo fotográfico, sino también a través del etalonaje. “Para mí, era importante que las escenas del primer acto tuvieran una paleta cromática saturada y transmitieran calidez, ya que es cuando comienza la historia de amor”, señala. “En el segundo acto, predominan los conflictos, y es bastante opuesto a lo que los espectadores han visto hasta ese momento. Por ello, las imágenes debían ser más frías en general. Mi objetivo en el tercer acto era que el color reflejara la realidad, de modo que creamos una estética natural y auténtica, puesto que la historia concluye”.

Acevedo was happy that everything turned out so well, despite the challenges that a low-budget film can present. “The locations chosen for filming were near an airport," said Acevedo. "The number of times we had to interrupt shots because of the noise of the planes is an allegory of the effort we put into the film, and no one would ever know."

But in the end, it was all worth it. “This feature film was a challenge for the creatives who participated in the project, and we are very happy to have been chosen by a renowned platform like HBO Max,” he concludes.
