Blackmagic Design - URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G2 - Night Caller

At URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G2 by Blackmagic Design was the camera chosen by director Chad Ferrin and cinematographer Kyle McConaghy to shoot Night Caller.

The filmmaker Chad Ferrin, known for films like Exorcism at 60,000 Feet y The Deep Ones, decided to shape Night Caller from a different perspective than his last films: “The Deep Ones It was a success from an artistic and financial point of view. This encouraged us to raise a few dollars and produce a film in a short time and on a modest budget.”

Together with the director of photography Kyle McConaghy, Ferrin analyzed films from the '70s and '80s that evoked a grainy, bleak environment, which was the style they wanted to achieve in Night Caller. After this period of analysis, the duo opted for the model URSA Mini Pro G2: "The G2 is extraordinary. I have shot several feature films with it and I like it more and more. The functions are excellent, and the image is natural and cinematic. On my last project, I used another camera and then I regretted not having resorted to the URSA model."

Versatility and adaptability were two constants of the filming, since the filming team Night Caller I only had 10 days for filming. Likewise, having a limited budget, maximum use was made of the natural light. McConaghy reports that the filming experience was satisfactory despite these conditions: "The URSA Mini Pro model is not always given the recognition it deserves for its performance in low light conditions. But it manages to capture details very well, even when increasing the exposure. In a pivotal scene, Clementine accesses the scene of a murder through a long exterior staircase. Even though it was night, with street lights and a tube A week “We were able to effectively illuminate a huge space while retaining an impressive level of detail in the shadows.”

Post-production with DaVinci Resolve
