The short 'Sorda' will become a feature film by Distinto Films
Following the path of recent works such as Little pig by Carlota Martínez-Pereda, Deaf by Eva Libertad and Nuria Muñoz will have a new version in the form of a feature film.
Deaf is presented as a reflection about the concerns of non-hearing people and, in particular, about the fears of a deaf woman who faces motherhood in a society full of obstacles and prejudices. Played by deaf actress Miriam Garlow, sister of one of the directors, the story is based on her life experience. Along with her, the actor Pepe Galera plays Darío, who worked on sign language for the occasion.
The successful journey of Deaf, the public reception and, especially, the sensitivity to address the subject, have led the production company Miriam Porté to focus on the work of the two directors with whom he is already working on the development of the feature film that will bear the seal of Distinto Films (Basil, Six ordinary days, Watermelon juice) in production. The feature film Deaf It will be a co-production between Distinto Films (Barcelona), Verbena Films (Madrid) and Nexus CreaFilms (Murcia).
The project is located in development phase and plans to begin filming in the year 2024.
Deaf, in the shortlist for the Goyas
Produced by Nexus CreaFilms with the support of ICAA, deaf is part of the shortlist of short films candidates for Goya. The short already accumulates 49 national and international awards, among them 9 audience awards: the Audience Award for the Ibero-American Short Film Competition Spanish Version/SGAE; the Biznaga de Plata Audience Award in the 'Affirming the rights of women' section of the Malaga Festival; the award for best Spanish short at the NIFF (Navarra International Film Festival); the award at the Aswan International Women's Film Festival (Egypt); or the award for best foreign short at the Snowtown Film Festival in New York. Likewise, the work has been selected in more than 100 festivals from around the world_ desde el Athens Film Festival de EEUU, al Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia de Japón, o CineLebú en Chile (los 3 preseleccionadores de los Oscar).
This is how they explain Libertad and Muñoz the possible reasons for success of Deaf: "The deaf women tell us that they feel very identified with Angela's emotions and fears regarding motherhood, and the deaf men identify with the communication and invisibility problems of the protagonist. We have also verified the impact that the short has on the hearing public, who empathize with Angela and are shocked by the discovery of a reality that had never been considered before."
