The first season of the contest 1% Quiz in the Netherlands, recorded at EMG's Mediahaven studio in Amsterdam, has featured elegant lighting design by Henk-Jan van Beek of the design studio Light-H-Art which had 110 Esprites, 98 LEDBeam 350, 46 LEDBeam 150 and 20 T1 Profile moving lights, from Robe supplied by Eventec.

Dutch producers Blue Circle Productions They added some of their own uniquely Dutch elements as this was the first time the show's concept had been produced outside of the UK where it originated on ITV.

One hundred contestants, who are also the audience, try to answer a question that only 1% of the country can get right. The program is presented as an intelligence test, with questions based on logic and common sense, rather than general knowledge, like so many others.

Henk-Jan worked closely with the Dutch set designer Harald Kassies, which took the original competition scenery and reinvented it with some small adaptations that allowed the 100 contestants to sit around a striking and elegant 270 cm circular decoration.

One luminaire per person

“Continuity was absolutely vital when it came to lighting,” explains Henk-Jan, who needed one luminaire per person to reproduce the fast and complex set of signals built into the Market Graph gaming machine.

“I wanted a fixture that gave exactly the same light quality and characteristics and the same TC using the same LED light engine.”

The key light for each contestant was aligned at the same distance to produce identical CT whites in addition to the blues and reds associated with the game's keys, as well as nice front lighting.

The luminaries Spirit met all the requirements thanks to its high CRI and its CMY color mix flat field. Additionally, these 100 luminaires also had to fit into very tight spaces allocated on three circular trusses mounted at slightly different levels on the ceiling, approximately 13 – 14 meters from the contestants.

Henk-Jan also greatly appreciated the good zoom of the Esprite, the precision of the framing shutters and the frost, since sometimes it was necessary to capture very small areas with the zoom to illuminate only the face and head of the contestants.

Presenter Tijl Beckand stood in different positions in the center of the set, and the space between the two ends of the 270-degree piece of set seating was filled with a large LED screen showing the status of the game.

Ten additional Esprites were used to cover these positions of the presenter from behind and in front, so that he could move freely and be captured by any of the 13 cameras with excellent facial lighting.

As for the LEDBeam 350 They were placed in a spherical shape around the studio floor in the center of the set, and on the largest of the circular trusses at the rear, where they provided classy beam work. They were chosen for their small size and to add drama especially to aerial and high-level shots.

The little ones LEDBeam 150 They were also used for background and fill lighting of the contestants and the audience and to ensure that there were no “black holes” in the rear shots.
