Quirino Awards 2023 Televisions TV Latin America Europe animation

The Coproduction and Business Forum Quirino Awards 2023 has hosted a session in which public television stations from Europe and Latin America have reflected on animated content and explored new avenues for cooperation.

Over two days, participants analyzed the programming strategies, as well as the purchasing, production and co-production policies of animated content of their channels, and debated the challenges they face as public media. They have been able to do this thanks to the framework offered by RTVE and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), organizers of this event that took place on May 10 and 11 in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife.

With a focus on Europe, the first of the tables included the participation of representatives from BBC Children’s (United Kingdom), DR (Denmark), Reading (Germany), Latvian Television (Latvia), LRT (Lithuania), Radio Television of Kosovo (Kosovo), RTP (Portugal), RTVE (Spain), TRM – Teleradio Moldova (Moldavia), YLE (Finland) and EBU.

Representantes de RTVC (Colombia), CANAL IPE – IRTP (Peru), RTVE (Spain), RTP (Portugal), Pakapaka (Argentina), NTV (Chile), TV3 (España) y Canal Capital / Eureka (Colombia) explicaron los desafíos que enfrentan a la hora de produce, buy and co-produce animated content, and analyzed some of the co-productions that are being carried out with the participation of different channels in the region.

To close these activities, a meeting was held between Ibero-American and European public television stations with the aim of promoting the circulation of animated content between both regions. Among other issues, it was proposed to share information on the project calls promoted by public television on both sides of the Atlantic and were presented case studies of co-productions in which two or more countries in the region participate. Furthermore, we reflected on the pedagogical role of public media, which should “develop trends rather than follow them,” and discussed the changes in the sector, including growing competition from streaming platforms and social networks.
