PixelCluster works on a sustainability protocol for the animation and VFX industry

The recently signed agreement between PixelClúster (animation and digital creation cluster of the Community of Madrid) and Madrid Film Office It will materialize in the form of a sustainability protocol and carbon footprint calculation for the world of animation and VFX.

In response to growing concerns about climate change and environmental sustainability, PixelClúster has decided to undertake the development of a specific sustainability protocol for calculating the carbon footprint in animation and visual effects productions.

With the support of Madrid Film Office, PixelClúster plans to create a comprehensive sustainability protocol that covers all stages of production: from pre-production planning to post-production processes. This set of guidelines will include recommendations on energy efficient workflows, waste management strategies and responsible sourcing of materials. The initiative will be accompanied by the development of a carbon footprint calculation tool, which will allow studies to accurately measure their emissions and track their progress toward achieving sustainability goals.

The agreement will be developed in two parts. The first, which will end before the end of the year, includes the creation of the sustainability protocol and calculation of the carbon footprint in animation and VFX productions, and a carbon footprint calculation tool. In the second, which will extend throughout 2024, the promotion and how to include in the training of active professionals and new generations of technicians. At the moment, three tables working with experienced members of the cluster (one from Animation, another from VFX and a final training) is already working in this direction.

PixelClúster has also confirmed that for the development of the protocol it is relying on the environmental consulting firm Green Deal, a company specialized in audiovisuals that will provide the environmental consultant certified by AENOR, IQNet and Bureau Veritas in carbon footprint calculation and environmental auditing.
