Telefónica stars in the first shutdown of the copper network in Europe
On April 19, 2024, coinciding with its anniversary, Telefónica Spain will turn off its copper network, currently made up of 589,000 ADSL users.
Telefónica In just four months, it will become one of the first countries in the world to definitively opt for fiber optics to the home (FTTH), thus culminating the group's powerful approach to this modality. In this way, the Spanish company continues the countdown that began on April 19, 2023, when he decided to stop adding copper.
The panorama in Europe is extremely slower than in Spain. Deutsche Telekom, main agent in Germany, does not have the date of this shutdown on the horizon; the industry of United Kingdom and France, for their part, estimate to make the transition in 2030. Other markets, such as Netherlands o Finland, will accompany Spain and eliminate copper from its supply in the first quarters of 2024.
Telefónica Spain will continue to offer its customers in Spain an alternative to connection via ADSL. In places where fiber is not available, users will be able to access digital services via satellite or through mobile connections.
