He Catalan Sailing Skate and the sustainability of the sea are the axes of a new documentary promoted by Bakery Films with the support of agbar which is already being filmed within the framework of the America's Cup.
The work began filming within the framework of the “Return to the island of Menorca” in the first week of july and will conclude in October during a regatta America's Cup where more than 300 sailing skates. The objective of documentary is to show the uniqueness of this sport, the Catalan culture around this boat and raise awareness among spectators about the importance of protecting the sea.
On board the boat will be Olivia Almond, who has joined this project as a narrator to advance the defense of the environment and the rights of marine animals. Mandle will be in charge of organically weaving all the stories and moments, introducing the participants and specialists in order to capture the urgency of living in harmony with our seas and oceans. Next to her will be Gerard Esteva, president of the Union of Sports Federations of Catalonia; Rafael Figuerola, master carpenter in charge of building and repairing the sailing skids, and Nina Hoareau, oceanographer and researcher in physical oceanography who will be in charge of observing and analyzing physical parameters of the oceans, such as salinity and temperature, to improve the quality of measurements and validate numerical simulations.
The “Patí Científic” will also be part of this work, a ship based on the sailing skid, a small catamaran created in Barcelona in the 1920s. It is a traditional construction without a rudder that slides over the waves at high speed. A year ago, the Institute of Marine Sciences developed a “Scientific Patí”, equipping one of these vessels with oceanographic sensors and turning it into a tool to study salinity, temperature, the presence of plastics and other parameters of Mediterranean waters.
