'Second Prize' will represent Spain in the race for the 2025 Oscars
Eduardo Noriega, member of the Spanish and Hollywood Film Academies, revealed at an event held at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Madrid that the film nominated by Spain to compete in the 97th edition of the Oscars in the category of Best International Film will be 'Second Prize', the particular portrait of Isaki Lacuesta ('One year, one night', 2022; 'Entre dos aguas', 2018) about the Granada band Los Planetas.
Second prize is directed by Isaki Lacuesta, co-directed by Pol Rodríguezand written by Lacuesta y Fernando Navarro. Daniel Ibáñez, Cristalino, Stéphanie Magnin, Mafo, Chesco Ruiz and Edu Rejón give life to this particular biopic set in the 90s and focused on the legendary band Los Planetas. Without mentioning the name of the Granada combo, Lacuesta tells a story about an indie music group at the end of the 90s in one of its most delicate moments. The film, a Spanish-French production with The Terrace Films, Áralan Films, Ikiru Films, Bteam Prods, Sidereal Cinema, Los Ilusos Films, Toxicosmos AIE y Capricci Films, swept the 2024 Malaga Festival, taking home the Biznaga de Oro for Best Spanish Film and winning the awards for Best Direction (Lacuesta and Pol Rodríguez) and Best Editing (Javi Frutos).
Second Prize it prevails over the also musical The blue star, a film directed by Javier Macipe and produced by MOD Producciones, El Pez Amarillo and Cimarrón, in co-production with La Charito Films and Prisma that depicts the life of Mauricio, a famous Spanish rocker who travels through Latin America looking to rediscover his vocation. The third feature film in this contest was Marco, a 2024 Spanish biographical drama film directed by the duo Aitor Arregi and Jon Garaño (Handia', 'La trinchera infinite', 'Cristóbal Balenciaga) starring Eduard Fernández as Enric Marco. Produced by Atresmedia Cine, the film focuses on a man who was able to sustain a big lie for years: that he had been a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp.
Second Prize He now begins a long journey in which he will have to overcome different phases to finally be part of the small selection of films that aspire to one of the most coveted awards in the cinema.
