Madrid will host the new Cinema Museum, an initiative of the Film Academy and the Ministry of Culture
The president of the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Spain, Fernando Méndez-Leite, and the Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun have announced the creation of the Cinema Museum, which will be located in the old NO-DO building (Calle Velázquez 145, Madrid).
He Cinema Museum born with him aim to create a exhibition center reference of the Spanish cinematographic activity in an emblematic place in our audiovisual history. The building, which will be rehabilitated for its new use, will allow the exhibition and conservation of cinematographic heritage.
This museum project will facilitate the preservation, compression, valorization and celebration of the Spanish audiovisual heritage. To do this, it will have a program of exhibitions, screenings and educational initiatives that guarantee accessibility and inclusion for all audiences. This new space will also constitute an enclave in which to develop opportunities to engage new generations of artists and film professionals, academics, critics and film lovers.
He Cinema Museum It will be located in the building from which, during the Franco regime, the Spanish Cinematographic Newscast, known as NO-DO. With the arrival of democracy, the building went through various stages until it became the headquarters of RTVE. This use was maintained until the state public radio and television professionals moved to a new building in 2007, leaving it unused. The building has a total constructed area of 4,840 square meters and a useful area of 3,913 square meters, spread over four floors.
The NO-DO archives, which were in that building, nearly 70,000 negatives, are deposited in the Conservation and Restoration Center (CCR) of the Spanish Film Archive. De su mantenimiento se ocupó entonces el Ministerio de Administraciones Públicas hasta que en 2017 el Instituto de Cinematografía y de las Artes Audiovisuales (ICAA), dependiente del Ministerio de Cultura, asumió su administración. A partir de estos archivos y de material patrimonial, se habilitará un espacio de memoria e interpretación para preservar y difundir la historia del edificio y el papel que jugó el NO-DO en el imaginario audiovisual, facilitando así el acceso a los archivos del NO-DO y la historia del audiovisual español durante el franquismo.
Fernando Méndez-Leite, presidente de la Academia de Cine, ha señalado que “con esta cesión se inician los trabajos para el desarrollo y la creación de este Museo que reivindicará el cine en nuestro país y el talento cinematográfico nacional. Este Museo es necesario para no olvidar lo que fuimos y lo que somos, para valorar el trabajo de los que pusieron los cimientos y de tantos otros profesionales que han construido la Historia del cine español. Y para dar a conocer y apreciar en toda su dimensión las nuevas miradas que van llegando al cine español”. Por su parte, el ministro de Cultura, Ernest Urtasun, trasladó que los principales objetivos del museo serán “poner en valor ese legado, compartirlo con la ciudadanía, promover el interés por nuestras artes cinematográficas y generar nuevas oportunidades de diálogo, creación y participación en torno al cine español”.
