Canon surprises at IBC 2025 with the versatility of the new EOS C50
The smallest camera to date in the EOS Cinema series, Canon C50, is surprising at IBC 2025 for the variety of film recording configurations it offers, from quick shoots to large-scale productions. In Amsterdam it also debuts the widest lens to date in its Cine-Servo range, CN5x11 IAS T R1/P1.
With a compact design, it offers a variety of professional features for those professionals who, increasingly, combine video and photo at the highest level. At the heart of the EOS C50's design is a nuevo sensor CMOS 7K full frame that, together with a advanced DIGIC DV 7 processor, provide spectacular image quality for both video recording and taking photos, including Internal RAW video recording at up to 7K at 60P, high speed recording up to 4K a 120P / 2K a 180P, as well as 32 MP high-resolution photographs and lots of detail.
The C50, due to its features, is positioned between the camera between R5C and the C70, in a range that is led at the top of the range with the C400 and the C500 Mark II, and will compete in the same segment as the popular Sony FX3. It is the first of this range that offers open gate recording (open pitch) that uses the entire surface of the sensor for maximum resolution and flexibility. By capturing images across the full width and height of the sensor using the new mode Full Frame 3:2 of the sensor, larger images are achieved, which take advantage of the full circle of full frame lenses. Open gate recording offers filmmakers greater flexibility in post-production, since it allows you to have horizontal and vertical video formats to edit them with total freedom from the same footage, with a very wide margin to reframe the images. When used in conjunction with anamorphic lenses, the result is a taller image with a wide, immersive cinematic look.
Videographers working to tight deadlines can simultaneously capture a full-angle image and a cropped vertical or square version, ideal for social media and advertising, using the Simultaneous Trimmed Recording (Simultaneous Crop Recording) of the EOS C50. The cropped area can be moved horizontally for optimal framing and recorded in a different format to suit the requirements of the job delivery.
High resolution in both video and photo
As a true hybrid camera, the EOS C50 combines advanced capabilities to produce 7K video and 32MP photos. The information on the screen is optimized whether the camera is set to Video mode or Photo mode, with the usual EOS Cinema interface for video and the classic Canon EOS R menu for photos.
Both videographers and photographers will be able to benefit from the Dual Pixel CMOS AF II autofocus from Canon, offering high-speed, high-precision subject detection and tracking. Precision enables eye targeting to prioritize people, dogs, cats and birds, with additional controls to tailor autofocus speed and tracking response appropriate for each subject.
The new C50 is reminiscent of the design that Canon introduced in the RV50 or the C80, with a very small size, compact and light (just 665 grams) and very powerful features. Designed for agility, the EOS C50's lightweight, modular design allows for intuitive handling, whether shooting handheld or on a gimbal (three-axis stabilizer). Thanks to its linear, low-profile body, as well as multiple accessory mounting points, it integrates seamlessly into modern rigging setups. The camera can be mount oriented horizontally or vertically, with the screen and menu adjusting automatically to accommodate vertical orientation.
The EOS C50's detachable handle improves control and comfort while handling. Likewise, it has two 3-pin XLR audio terminals full-size buttons and control dials for professional-quality audio recording, plus a REC button and rocker control. zoom (with motorized servo) in the style of traditional video cameras. In addition to native support for the wide range of RF lenses, EF/PL lenses can be mounted to the EOS C50 using Canon's PL-RF adapter, which can be conveniently attached to the camera body, as well as using a selection of Canon EF-EOS R mount adapters.
Connection options
A wide selection of connection options ensure the EOS C50 meets the demands of modern professional productions. In addition to the XLR inputs, this camera It has a MIC connection, another Time Code connection, HDMI OUT (Type A) and USB (Type C). Additionally, dual CFexpress and SD card slots offer a wide range of simultaneous recording options, including different file formats, resolution and proxy settings.
The EOS C50 is compatible con UVC/UAC to enable live broadcasting in high resolution, up to 60P/50P, using a single USB cable, in addition to the XC protocol for remote operation of the camera, using compatible mobile apps or optional accessories, such as the Canon RC-IP1000 Remote Controller. Both video clips and photos can be transmitted to clients in real time, via Wi-Fi or USB, with the professional app Content Transfer Professional (CTP, Professional Content Transfer) from Canon.
The Canon collaboration with Adobe has been expanded to the EOS C50, so this camera supports Frame.io's Camera to Cloud connectivity. Along with the EOS C400 and EOS C80, this support allows proxy files to be sent directly from the camera to the Frame.io platform, providing a seamless and reliable path to send from production to post-production.
With its powerful connectivity, flexible design and powerful full frame capabilities, the EOS C50 sets a new standard for compact cinema cameras. Building on the success of the EOS R5 C, it provides uncompromising image quality for both video and still photography.
On the other hand, Canon has announced a series of important Free firmware updates for EOS Cinema cameras, which will be available at the end of the year. These updates include the addition of 3:2 Open Gate RAW recording, with a resolution of 6,000 x 4,000 for the EOS C400; and View Assist during Playback for the EOS C80, among other key feature enhancements such as focus peaking on both cameras, as well as the EOS R5 C and EOS C70.
