Daniel Sánchez Arévalo begins filming his new film 'Big Game'
'Big Game', the new feature film by director Daniel Sánchez Arévalo, begins filming in Extremadura in a production of Movistar Plus+, The Tiger Movie AIE, Estela Films, Tenampa Films, Cut One (Boomerang TV), Pólvora Films and Tinnitus, with the participation of Atresmedia.
The filming of the new original Movistar Plus+ film, starring Antonio de la Torre, Mariló Márquez Villa and Julián Villagrán, with a script by María Ballesteros and José Antonio de Pascual, will continue for seven weeks in the towns of Fregenal de la Sierra, Bodonal de la Sierra, Zafra and Higuera la Real, in Badajoz.
The film is a rural thriller with overtones of black comedy that explores the reasons that lead us to believe in what we cannot see. In the middle of the night, José Luis, a swineherd from Extremadura, comes home covered in blood and claiming to have seen a tiger. Is he telling the truth or is this a bizarre excuse to hide the fact that he was stealing three Iberian pigs? Thus begins a story that runs on the back of a tiger until it completely shakes the quiet life of Fregenal de la Sierra, a small town in the province of Badajoz. A flight forward or the agonizing journey to prove a truth?
Based on the podcast 'El Tigre'
Big game is a podcast adaptation The Tiger, winner of the Ondas Award for Best Fiction Podcast in 2025, written by María Ballesteros and José Antonio de Pascual and available on the Podium Podcast platform.
Between rural thriller, drama and comedy
Daniel Sánchez Arevalo, highlights that the film is "a rural thriller. A drama. A black comedy. A western, which is what I have always wanted to film. All of that is intended to be Big game. It's difficult for me to find references. And I suppose that inability to categorize it is what attracted me most to the idea and what I pursue most. In any case, I think it is something very much ours and that defines us as a society and human beings. One of the things that caught me the most about the podcast was the choice of the cast with local people from Fregenal de la Sierra, which gave it a lot of truth and realism. For this reason, in the film I have decided to do the same and surround Antonio de la Torre with non-professional actors: Mariló, her children, her co-workers... everyone, people from the town, to maintain the realistic tone. For this, an exhaustive local casting full of authentic gems has been carried out and then, with our protagonists, we make a total immersion in that peculiar and unique Extremaduran accent, which is also very little exploited in our cinematography and which, for me, without a doubt, is another of the great attractions of the project.
Guillermo Farré, director of the Original Cinema and Spanish Cinema area of Movistar Plus+, considers that "at Movistar Plus+ we are great admirers of Daniel Sánchez Arévalo and we really wanted to work with him. Since the first script versions of Big game, we were captured by the strength of the project: a very personal mix of thriller and black comedy, with exciting moments and a carousel of memorable characters. It is a look at the contemporary rural world that we believe will attract a lot of attention, and that fits perfectly with Movistar Plus+'s commitment to promoting projects with a unique look, that surprise the viewer and that have the ambition of reaching the general public."
In the words of the producers Felix Tusell (Estela Films), Carmela Martínez Oliart (Tenampa Films), Rafa Taboada (Cut One), Arturo Valls (Pólvora Films) and Daniel Sánchez Arévalo (Tinnitus): “For us, Big game It is a unique film: a rural thriller with a western soul, sprinkled with touches of black humor and an Extremaduran accent. In the script by Ballesteros and Pascual, pure genre and traditional naturalism are expertly balanced. From this base, Sánchez Arévalo directs Antonio de la Torre in the construction of a memorable protagonist who will force the viewer to decide if he is a cowardly liar or a martyr capable of defending the truth to the last consequences.
The film will be released in theaters in 2027 by Warner Bros. Pictures Spain and international sales will be carried out by Film Factory.
