The Mayor - Filming - La Caña Sisters

Alfonso Cortés-Cavanillas opts for analogue and black and white for 'The Mayor', a film produced by La Caña Sisters which will combine traditional cinema and narrative resources.

The mayor it's a customary drama which addresses in depth issues such as leadership, friendship, the need for recognition and public exposure, in a context marked by virality and lack of reflection. He does this by framing the story in a small rural community, with a current look at how prestige, power and collective perception are built today.

The Mayor - Filming - La Caña SistersThe film will develop a visual proposal that will combine filming in 16mm analog support with sequences captured by mobile devices. “In contrast to the texture, materiality and aesthetics of traditional black and white cinema, the feature film will also incorporate color scenes linked to a more immediate and contemporary visual language,” said the director, whose filmography includes films such as Lobo, The mill o Luna.

The movie, which is filmed between Cantabria and the Canary Islands, brings together a cast headed by Urko Olazabal, Ruth Díaz, Manuel Morón, Asier Etxeandia and Pastora Vega, along with Eric Masip, José Ángel Egido, Marta Mejías, José Luis Torrijo, Jaime Martín, Nur Olabarria and Mikel Niso. It is produced by La Caña Sisters, a Canarian production company founded in 2024 and part of the Group The Cane, which also includes La Caña Brothers and Imagine.

This is the synopsis of The mayor: "The story is set in Horazejo, a town of twelve inhabitants lost in emptied Spain. There lives Eladio Azcona, a rancher who has dedicated his entire life to caring for cows and whose routine changes unexpectedly after taking an intelligence test through a mobile application. Converted overnight into the supposedly most intelligent man in the region, his neighbors push him to run as mayor of the municipality."
