Luis Fernández could leave RTVE this Friday

The president of the RTVE Corporation has called an Extraordinary Board of Directors for next Friday the 13th, for which the agenda has not been made public. According to sources close to the Corporation, Fernández plans to announce his resignation.

In recent months, rumors about an early departure of the former president of the RTVE Corporation have been circulating. Even from parliamentary circles, since Luis Fernández has also been the first president elected by Parliament, he has been repeatedly asked about this issue.

Fernández, echoing these comments, during the meeting of the RTVE Board of Directors, even commented to the directors that if his resignation occurred before concluding his term, they would be the first to know. Now, the president of the Corporation has called a new Council for next Friday the 13th without a known agenda. Therefore, everything seems to indicate that his resignation from office will be the only point to be discussed.

Changes in RTVE

Although the reasons for Fernández's possible departure would have to be found in personal reasons, according to sources close to RTVE, it would be a certain disagreement with the Government regarding the new financing model without advertising that would finally prompt him to present his resignation.

To appoint a new president in the Government, a new consensus with the PP would be needed with the approval of two-thirds of Congress. And given the logjam that exists in other organizations for its renewal, everything seems to indicate that RTVE could experience a long period of interim, a transition that would fall once again on Jaime Gaiteiro, corporate general director of RTVE and key man of the State Society of Industrial Participations (SEPI) during the general direction of Carmen Cafarell and the first months in the presidency of Luis Fernández.

Along with the president of the Corporation, some of the eighty management staff who have accompanied Fernández during these years could gradually abandon their positions. Professionals such as Javier Pons, Marta Bretos, Rosalía Lloret or Francisco Media, many of them from private companies, would see their positions in jeopardy after Fernández's departure.

A consensus president

Born in Santo Domingo de la Calzada (La Rioja) in 1957, Luis Fernández, before his appointment as president of the RTVE Corporation on January 15, 2007 after the reform carried out in the public entity and by agreement between PP and PSOE, developed intense activity in the United States in the previous years as CEO of the production company Promofilm. With a degree in Journalism from the Complutense University of Madrid and with extensive experience in the audiovisual sector and more than thirty years of activity, all in private companies, Luis Fernández knows radio, television, film and production, and has held management positions in different communication groups such as Prisa, Telecinco, COPE and Imagina.
