Could Rovi take control of TiVo?

The company that once became popular for the sale of simple Digital Video Recorders (DVRs), today is one of the main names in the industry for its commitment to smart television.

According to the New York Times, Narrator I would be negotiating the purchase of TiVo. The company that once became popular for selling simple Digital Video Recorders (DVRs), today is one of the main names in the industry as it supplies advanced devices that bring smart television closer to the viewer. However, TiVo did not want to confirm or deny that it is in negotiations with Rovi.

The American company presented its first video recorder in 1997, introducing to the market the possibility that the user could stop watching a program and continue it at any time they wanted at the exact point where they left off. TiVo also introduced the concept of buffering which constantly keeps the last hour of live broadcast stored. This means that if the viewer arrives home 10 minutes after the broadcast has started, they can go back those 10 minutes and enjoy it from the beginning. When you change the channel the buffer starts recording again.

For its part, Rovi is a benchmark in interactive program guides, metadata management in entertainment environments, areas in which it has more than 5,000 patents.

TiVo maintains alliances with numerous operators around the world as a provider of integrated STBs-DVRs.

In Spain, in June 2011, the cable operator Ono (today integrated into Vodafone) announced the signing of an agreement with TiVo to offer the service as exclusive distributor. TiVo services are also present in other countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, Australia or Taiwan.
