Grass Valley Kalypso HD Put to the Test in Live 3D Event
The recent National Hockey League game between the New York Rangers and the New York Islanders at Madison Square Garden was the first litmus test to see what the Kalypso HD switcher can offer for live stereoscopic broadcasts to the home.
The production company Video Game Creek, based in Hudson (New Hampshire), recently used the advanced Kaypso HD production center to produce in 3D the American National Hockey League match that pitted the New York Rangers against the NY Islanders at Madison Square Garden. Although Kalypso HD systems had already been used on several occasions, projecting 3D in theaters, this was the first time that the Grass Valley mixer has been used to put on air, and in stereoscopic, a live sports event broadcast to the home.
The 3D signal was broadcast through Cablevision to the New York metropolitan area as well as to a giant 3D screen installed for the occasion in Madison Square Garden itself and supplied by RealD using its stereoscopic cinema processing technology.
With 90 inputs and 48 outputs at full capacity, the Grass Valley Kalypson HD installed in the Video Game Creek mobile unit (16 meters) was in turn connected to a second unit that housed all the 3D processing equipment supplied by 3ality, a company that also supplied its special production rigs.
