Free access to DVB-RCS2 for interactive satellite environments

The second generation of the DVB system for satellite interactivity receives the green light from the DVB Steering Committee. Compared to DVB-RCS, the new solution offers higher transmission efficiency and new operating modes. The new encoding channel allows for greater capacity and robustness in the return channel.

The second generation of the DVB system for satellite interactivity receives the green light from the DVB Steering Committee. At its 67th meeting, the committee approved two of the three RCS2 specifications. DVB-RCS2 will offer substantial improvements over first generation systems. This standard was developed natively for IP services and is specified for interactive satellite services in various market segments, from professional to consumer. The specifications of the second generation of interactive DVB satellite services will be submitted to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) for formal standardization.

Compared to DVB-RCS, the new solution offers higher transmission efficiency and new operating modes. The new encoding channel allows for greater capacity and robustness in the return channel. The forward channel is based on the proven DVB-S2 specification and in combination with the generic encapsulation stream allows efficient transport of IP traffic.
