Accenture and KPN experiment with Google Glass in rich TV applications
Both companies are carrying out demonstrations during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that show the possibilities that the use of Google Glass by spectators would offer.
Accenture and Dutch operator KPN are piloting Google Glass and the Accenture Video Solution (AVS) focused on interactive TV, storage and control to greatly enrich the TV user experience.
Both companies are carrying out demonstrations of this technology during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Using KPN's interactive TV service, which is built on Accenture's video platform and allows subscribers to watch TV on more devices, the companies will show how Google Glass integrates with the AVS platform to offer hands-free voice-controlled interaction as well as the ability to share TV content between the main TV screen and Google Glass.
In Barcelona, we can see how Google Glass can control functions on the television such as content or channel selection, volume control, pause and fast forward/rewind, providing viewers with a unique device, independent of the platform for the chosen management and control.
On the other hand, viewers can access an extra layer of information in real time while watching shows. For example, when watching live sporting events, you can access statistics and other results or see highlights in a rich, personalized television experience.
As for TV Everywhere, this experience demonstrates how viewers can select a program stored in the cloud, and continue watching it on another device away from the main television.
Tom Loozen, general manager of the communications group at Accenture, highlighted that "our technology shows that companies and consumers are very interested in the practical possibilities of intelligence and wearing Google Glass in a connected environment. This type of innovation has enormous potential to offer users real-time access to an extra dimension of functionality and personalized information."
For his part, Diederik Rosenbaum, director of television at KP, has assured that "we are constantly seeking to differentiate the services we can offer to our subscribers. In the past, we have been the first to bring innovative services related to the Dutch market such as 4G, TV on mobile devices and start-over TV. This concept is the latest idea that we are exploring to enrich the television experience of our customers."
