The German broadcaster relies on Quantel's Enterprise sQ technology to gain speed and stability when it comes to airing its new 24-hour news channel in high definition.

The German channel ARD-Aktuell, whose broadcast began last April with a 24-hour service in high definition, has trusted in Enterpise sQ technology from Quantel to streamline news production.

The new sQ system supports around a hundred sQ Cut desktop editors, fully integrated with ARD's NRCS. Additionally, ten Quantel advanced editing workstations manage high production value pieces. The Enterprise sQ system is divided into two zones to provide additional redundancy and has storage for 600 hours of HD, more than enough to keep a full week's worth of material immediately available to all users of the system, including journalists and editors. who work on the weekly Wochenspiegel news.

Andreas Lützkendorf, Head of Programming at Tagesschau24, highlights that “we have carried out an exhaustive check to ensure that the system continues to function perfectly, with the highest load of high-definition data. “It was very important to us that the production workflow was not compromised during the four-month HD switchover period, and the Quantel system has delivered very stable HD performance.”

For his part, Detlef Kopp, technical director of ARD-Aktuell, admits that “we have chosen to stay with a two-zone model, not only to ensure that the broadcast can continue even in the event of a major failure, but also to allow so that updates can be carried out without problems. For a broadcaster that is transmitting throughout the day, it is not possible to shut down systems to install an update. We are producing 14 hours of programming a day with the Enterprise sQ system. For our news production users, it is a true success story.”

The ARD-Aktuell upgrade also involved the construction and commissioning of a new 320m² HD studio, which includes a large 17.5 meter video wall offering a constantly changing panorama of images and graphics.
