The sale of Ultra High Definition televisions now exceeds one million units per month
By the end of the year, sales of Ultra High Definition televisions are expected to reach 15.2 million units.
According to a study by IHS Technology, the market push of the three major manufacturers has made it possible to reach, for the first time, the figure of one million Ultra High Definition televisions sold per month around the world.
The sale of UHDTV televisions exceeded 1.1 million units in March, which almost triples the 384,300 units sold in February. If we compare it to a year ago, the increase is even more spectacular since at that time there were barely more than 150,000 units per month.
Linda Lin, senior large display analyst at IHS, notes that "since UHDTV panels were first introduced to the market in 2012, demand for these next-generation displays has been slow to grow, primarily because these types of TVs were prohibitively expensive. But with the technology becoming more widespread, along with increasingly aggressive marketing from major manufacturers, Ultra High Definition TVs are starting to take off."
Another factor to consider is the upcoming World Cup in Brazil, an event that usually marks the increase in the sale of large format televisions (regardless of whether the user can receive 4K signals).
By the end of the year, sales of Ultra High Definition televisions are expected to reach 15.2 million units, well above the 3.1 million units sold in 2013, representing 6 percent of this year's total LCD market. Panels 60 inches or larger will be the star, accounting for 27 percent of the total UHD panel space.
IHS predicts that demand for UHDTV panels will grow to 68.4 million units in 2018, an increase of 350%.
