In 1556, Charles of Habsburg, aged 56, ill and experiencing economic hardships that led him to divide the government of the empire between his son Philip and his brother Fernando, decided to retire to the Monastery of Yuste (Cáceres) to live a peaceful retirement. Spanish Television, in collaboration with Diagonal TV, has been filming scenes from the last stretch of Charles, King Emperor, the series starring Álvaro Cervantes. Filming will conclude in mid-August.

TVE's new historical fiction is filmed in the Yuste Monastery thanks to the collaboration of National Heritage. It is another historical enclave that serves as a setting for the filming of Charles, King Emperor, as has already happened with the Alhambra in Granada.

Very intimate scenes to portray what the retirement of a king meant, who was engaged in incessant activity throughout his domains for years until widowhood, illness, age and economic weakness forced him to retire.

Along with Álvaro Cervantes, the actors Laia Costa (María de Austria), Víctor Clavijo (Francisco de Borja), and Marina Salas (Leonor de Austria), among others, participate in the filming of these scenes, corresponding to chapters 16 and 17 of the series.

Likewise, the filming includes carriages, horses and figures (a total of 15 people) that will play the monks who accompany Carlos, and the entourage that shelters him as he enters the Monastery of Yuste, where the king stayed for two years.
