The Ericsson Media Delivery Network (MDN) solution has allowed Vodafone Portugal to add value in content distribution and offer a better user experience both on television and other video services.

Vodafone TvThanks to the solution Ericsson Media Delivery Network (MDN), Vodafone Portugal has managed to improve the television experience of its users.

MDN has thus made it possible to add value in the distribution of content and offer a better user experience both on television and in other video services, while reducing operating expenses. Among other benefits, it enables the creation of opportunities to accelerate next-generation consumer propositions and improve the quality of experience anywhere and on any device.

According to the Mobility Report that Ericsson published last November, mobile video will grow annually by 55 percent through 2021, illustrating the growing importance of service providers to adapt their delivery infrastructures to cope with the boom in online video traffic. As the Internet era of television brings further industry transformation, Vodafone Portugal's deployment with ricsson Media Delivery Network (MDN) will facilitate a rapid increase in video consumption ensuring a future-proof television experience.

The Ericsson MDN solution directly addresses the exponential growth and demand for streaming video content using a single platform approach and universal cache, which combine to offer service providers savings and increased visibility and converged control.

The integration of the Ericsson MDN solution with other technologies in the Ericsson Media area will improve the distribution of all content offered to Vodafone Portugal television customers, allowing the shift from set-top-box recordings to the cloud and support services such as personal recording, Catch TV and time shifting. This latest generation and agile framework will also allow existing services to be transformed, allowing for greater monetization and faster deployment.

Pedro Duarte, director of television and video services at Vodafone Portugal, recognizes that "our subscribers demand access to television and video content anywhere and at all times of the day and we need creative solutions to respond to this rapid growth and deliver on-demand services with high quality across an unprecedented number of devices and platforms. This project will allow us to distribute video content in a more efficient way, resulting in a better customer experience for our television customers, allowing them to move their recordings from set-top-boxes to their personal devices, through the cloud. Ericsson has demonstrated the ability to deliver the project with quality and in a timely manner.”

The Ericsson deployment will allow Vodafone Portugal to locate and manage content within its local network using a virtualized architecture to deliver content closer to the end user. By caching content in multiple locations across its network, Vodafone Portugal minimizes distances, improves efficiency and speed throughout the delivery process. Ericsson Media delivery network solution is already installed in other Vodafone subsidiaries operating in Europe.

Elisabetta Romano, head of television and media at Ericsson, maintains that "the constant increase in consumer expectations for television on the go places special importance on television service providers to simplify the process of seamless delivery of high-quality content. Our Ericsson Media Delivery Network solution offers television and video service providers optimization and delivery savings in bandwidth and allows for greater utilization of network capacity, while ensuring a higher quality of experience through mobile and fixed networks. These capabilities will mean that Vodafone Portugal can now play an even more active role in the evolving media value chain, allowing them to drive new content partnerships, implement new content-centric services and deliver superior user experiences.”
