FTTH lines are already close to 3.3 million
Direct fiber to the home continues to grow with Movistar leading the segment with 2.3 million lines.
The CNMC (National Markets and Competition Commission) has published data referring to the telecommunications market for the month of January 2016 in Spain.
Fiber optics once again boosted broadband in Spain. FTTH lines grew by 153,162 lines to a total of almost 3.3 million lines, of which more than 70% correspond to Movistar (2.3 million). DSL lines suffered a loss of 131,038.
In total, the fixed broadband fleet increased by 42,046 lines to a total of 13,220,079 and a proportion of 28.5 lines per 100 inhabitants.
In the month of January Vodafone (including Ono) and Orange (including Jazztel) gained lines, while Movistar subtracted lines from its fixed broadband park.
Regarding the market share for fixed broadband lines, 95% of fixed broadband lines are concentrated in the three main operators, Movistar, Orange (including Jazztel) and Vodafone (including Ono).
Regarding wholesale fixed broadband, the NEBA service, which has been increasing its lines since the end of 2014, added 12,868 new lines.
Mobile telephony
The fleet of mobile lines gained 23,032 lines in January. The increase registered in postpaid of 104,935 offset the decrease in prepaid, with 81,903 fewer lines. The month closed with a figure of 50,697,889 mobile lines, which is 0.4% more than in January 2015.
In this note from January 2016, the prepaid and postpaid mobile lines have been updated since January 2015. On the one hand, Tuenti has made an adjustment to its prepaid mobile lines to comply with the activity criteria of the CNMC and, on the other, the postpaid mobile lines of Lowi, an MVNO owned by Vodafone, have been included.
