'Travelers', Netflix's new bet, achieves a peculiar cinematic look in 4K with RED Dragon
Director of photography Neville Kidd ('Doctor Who', 'Outlander', 'Sherlock Holmes'...) opts for the RED camera with a 35 sensor along with a complete set of Cooke lenses.
Travelers, Netflix's latest sci-fi series, created by Brad Wright (co-creator of Stargate SG-1, Stargate: Atlasess and SGU Stargate Universe), has been filmed in 4K UHD with cameras RED Dragon (with S35 sensor) and lenses Cooke 5/i Range (18mm, 25mm, 32mm, 40mm, 50mm, 65mm, 75mm, 100mm and 135mm) together with S4/i lenses (14mm, 150mm, and 180mm) which has allowed cinematographer Neville Kidd to achieve a peculiar cinematic look.
Kidd said, "We started production in Vancouver on April 19, and from day one, I shot the characters wide open with a very shallow depth of field. I wanted a somewhat gritty look with a European flavor. By combining the way light is reflected and seeing the world with the Cooke Look, I captured a more natural image. That's important, since Travelers is set in a contemporary world and needs to feel natural to the viewer."
In 2014, Kidd won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Cinematography for a Miniseries or Movie, for the Sherlock episode His Last Vow, shot with early versions of Cooke 5/i. In December 2016, he was nominated for the Society of American Cinematographers' Outstanding Achievement Award in the Non-Commercial Television Series Regular category for the television series Outlander, shot with Cooke S4/i lenses.
A look for every traveler
Starring Eric McCormack, MacKenzie Porter and Nesta Marlee Cooper, Travelers The series features the last human survivors who discover how to send their consciousnesses directly to people in the 20th century. XXI. These 'travelers' take on the lives of random people, as they secretly work as a team to carry out missions to save humanity from a terrible future.
Kidd's lighting and cinematography give each of the five travelers a look to help define the persona they have taken on and blend them into the world around them. “It's a subtle way to tell the audience what this character is like and establish the person's mood,” Kidd said.
Travelers es una producción de Peacock Alley Entertainment, en asociación con Showcase (que disfruta de los derechos de emisión en Canadá) y Netflix.
