The third edition of the 4K Summit has offered an overview of the current and future state of Ultra High Definition, cameras and lenses, training, platforms, content and its application in the world of television.

On the last day of presentations, Hans Hoffmann, head of the media fundamentals and production technology unit (UER-EBU), and Stephan Heimbecher, director of innovations and technology standards at Sky Germany, were in charge of conveying the conclusions of the working group to those attending the 4KSummit in their capacity as co-presidents of the FAME Forum.

4K Summit 2017The 4K Summit reserved one of its panels to present the next revolution: 5G. A technology called to revolutionize the world of video and the next celebration of the 5G Forum at the Digital Content Pole in Malaga was announced in April 2018, where this technology will be analyzed in depth.

David Smith, Product Specialist de Rohde&Schwarz; Olie Buamann, Senior Technical Specialist de Ericsson; Xavi Redón, Product Manager of Cellnex, Jorge Ruano, Director of Innovation of Nokia, concluded that the first thing that the consumer will notice with the arrival of 5G in 2020-2022 is the improvement of telephone services, but that this will only be the beginning of countless improvements that will arrive step by step.

Cellnex, in its commitment to 4K transmission via DTT, has carried out a live broadcast from Mijas through channel 26 with three services in UHD statistical multiplication with HLG, HDR10 and SDR respectively.

OTT and 4K

Movistar, Ateme and Akamai starred in the panel on OTT and 4K, all of them focusing all their efforts on making the user experience in OTT environments as positive, or even better, than on linear television. Rubén Mellado, Global Video CTO of Telefónica He referred to the lack of standards and client device control as the key challenges for the distribution of Movistar in 4K via OTT. Ian Munford, Director of Product Marketing at Akamai, emphasized the need to improve live content distribution and that the business model must be beneficial for everyone. For his part, Gustavo Marra, VP of solutions and development at Ateme, stated that the distribution of on-demand content is experiencing strong growth in the United States.

As a closing to the three days dedicated to Ultra High Definition at the Digital Content Pole, the analyst IHS Markit, Paul Gray offered his conclusions to the event, making it clear that we are facing the golden age of content creation and presented the mobile phone as the new gateway for UHD to consumers. Gray ended by calling for safeguarding experience and not focusing on numbers, while he defended learning from past mistakes.

María Jesús Almazor, director of the Southern Territory of Telefónica Spain, gave the closing speech, stating that Spain is the European leader in installing fiber to the home and that this opens the door to Ultra High Definition content.

The 4K Summit has offered an overview of the current and future state of Ultra High Definition, cameras and lenses, training, platforms, content and its application in the world of television.

There have been a total of three days in which to listen and make contacts with experts in the sector, audiovisual producers, professionals, directors of multinationals, entrepreneurs, students and trainers from all areas involved in the Ultra High Definition industry.
