The third season of 'Brassic' (Sky), graded with DaVinci Resolve Studio
DaVinci Resolve Studio software Blackmagic Design has been used by post production company Core Post to grade the third season of Brassic (Sky).
Matt Brown, color manager, addressed several challenges in this project. The first was to manage to maintain the aesthetics of the series while embracing the visual changes that this new season added. To achieve this, Core Post He had to find a balance that worked well, which was found in adding some warmth in calm shots that took place indoors, and blue hues in hostile, cold environments.
In this way, they were introduced filters in order to preserve the warmth in the skin tones, while blues were added in grading, something that was previously solved in post-production. As Brown explains: "The filters worked very well, so they produced a realistic color on the skin, but not so much that it was detrimental to the end. In addition, the tonalities were protected by adjusting the colors when grading."
DaVinci Resolve Studio was also used for the visual effects of the fiction by utilizing the module Fusion. In total, the third season of Brassic, produced by Calamity Films, adds more than 400 visual effects. The fiction was recorded in format anamórfico 4K to deliver the material in 2.35.1, while the versions 16:9 were created with masks for Sky in definition HDR UHD, as well as a 16:9 SDR version for worldwide distribution from ITV International.
Continuous collaboration
Core Post carried out a first version of grading in HDR 4K together with Digital Imaging FX, responsible for the visual effects. Brown and visual effects supervisor Tanvir Hanif discussed how to resolve each hiccup in the process and then discussed the implementation of those decisions. “For example, I used a Power Window to grade the sky, which overexposed the moon when processing the images in HDR, but the visual effects made it easy to correct,” explains Brown. Since Core Post and Digital Imaging FX work from the Media City from Salford, there was the opportunity to collaborate virtually from DaVinci Resolve timelines and physically to finalize material for Brassic.
