Morena Films hires Álex Martínez Roig as non-executive president
In order to reinforce its commitment as a cutting-edge audiovisual producer, Morena Films has incorporated Álex Martínez Roig as non-executive president, reconfirming its space as one of the main production companies at the forefront of the audiovisual sector, inside and outside our borders.
Martínez Roig began his career as a journalist in media such as SER or El País, where he participated in the launch of the supplement Tentaciones and as deputy director of El País Semanal.
Later, already fully involved in the audiovisual industry, he was content director at Sogecable and Canal+, where he also served as general director of content and rights purchases.
His last position was within Movistar+ where he held various functions as head of Content management and strategy, in all channels and services offered by Movistar+, in addition to third-party content on all platforms. He also led the direction of the Acquisition of Other People's Fiction Rights policy and in negotiations with Third Party channels.
Morena Films, was founded in 1999 with the aim of producing innovative, quality content, and with a clear commercial ambition in international markets. He has produced more than 100 works including feature films, documentaries, animation and TV series, working, among others, with directors such as Asghar Farhadi, Oliver Stone, Iciar Bollain, Steven Soderbergh, Carlos Saura, Javier Fesser, Pablo Trapero and Benito Zambrano, and with internationally recognized actors such as Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz, Gael García Bernal, Ricardo Darín, Alicia Vikander and Benicio del Toro.
Regarding his arrival at the company, Martínez Roig points out that "the moment that the audiovisual industry in Spanish is experiencing is exciting, with new local and global challenges, and with talent and technical capacity at the level of very few European countries. Alex Martínez Roig will work side by side with a team of twenty people led by Pilar Benito as CEO and creative producers: John Gordon y Alvaro Longoria (founders of Morena), Merry Colomer y Pedro Uriol who have led this production company to become a benchmark for audiovisual production in our country.
The arrival of the new non-executive president at Morena Films reaffirms its interest in promote the Spanish audiovisual industry, promoting international co-production and adapting to new trends in audiovisual production and consumption, as well as emerging business models. Morena Films looks more than ever to the future and to the audiovisual revolution in which we are immersed.
New projects
Morena is tackling very powerful projects this year such as the film On the margins, directorial debut by Juan Diego Botto and starring Penélope Cruz and Luis Tosar, which was presented at the Venice Film Festival, with a standing ovation lasting several minutes, and which Perlak will inaugurate within this 70th edition of the San Sebastián International Film Festival.
The documentary will also be screened at this Festival Tequila. Sex, Drugs and Rock and roll directed by Álvaro Longoria and Little pig, directed by Carlota Martínez-Pereda, with Laura Galán and Carmen Machi, which received a wonderful reception from the public and international buyers, at the latest edition of the Sundance Film Festival. These three films will hit movie theaters throughout Spain before the end of the year, as well as the Christmas comedy Kings against Santa, directed by Paco Caballero with Karra Elejalde, David Verdaguer and Eva Ugarte.
Two new series produced by the television division of Morena Films: The invisible girl for Disney+ and The Invisibles, for Paramount, will reach the public in the first months of 2023. The icing on the cake this year 2022 will be the filming of the second part of the successful and charismatic film Champions, by Javier Fesser, which under the title Campeonex 2.0 will hit theaters with the commitment to maintain the contagious magical spirit of the first.
