The RTVE unions stand up to the Government for the modification of the statutes that will give executive power to Elena Sánchez

The unions UGT y AND, as representatives of the union majority in the CRTV, have expressed their discomfort and rejection of the decision of the Council of Ministers that last Tuesday approved the modification of the Corporation's bylaws to provide the new interim president of the corporation, Elena Sánchez, with executive powers beyond the powers that the current legal framework attributes to her.

The Government justifies this decision so that the Board of Directors of the Corporation is not tied up until Parliament elects a new president of RTVE after the resignation of José Manuel Pérez Tornero.

The unions have denounced that this action by the Government of Spain "skips Parliament, the true owner of CRTVE, and gives the eventual president of the Board of Directors, Elena Sánchez, powers that can only correspond to the Presidency of the Corporation democratically elected by two thirds of the Spanish Cortes."

According to these unions, "a clear attempt to attack the CRTVE without any contemplation is evident, disregarding the representation of sovereignty held by Parliament, the workers of the CRTVE and the entire citizenry. Especially when the current president, Ms. Elena Sánchez, said by the team of experts of the Public Competition, provided a project for its presentation that was nothing more than a carbon copy copied from Wikipedia, simply the 'project' of a presidential candidate. without own project.”

"The Government of Pedro Sánchez sold us that its commitment to CRTVE was clearly for independence and plurality. But yesterday, just as when Rosa María Mateo was appointed sole administrator, a partisan coup occurred, far from the political consensus that should sustain an institution like the State Public Radio and Television, distancing it increasingly from the citizens by perceiving that it is at the service of the interests of a government," the unions emphasize.

UGT and SI demand that a Presidency of the CRTVE be appointed that arises from the Cortes with the greatest possible consensus, after the appointment of the vacancy that Pérez Tornero has left on the Board of Directors.

In his opinion, it is imperative that a new Presidency of the Board of Directors be elected to provisionally direct the CRTVE. "A presidency that has to be free of any suspicion, and even less that of incapacity or of participating in outside interests that could put CRTVE at risk, either by selling it to external production or dismantling it to place and benefit acquaintances and friends. We ask with the greatest urgency from the counselors a majority consensus for the election of this person, who cannot be the current president, because it is necessary to address this situation immediately, before Ms. Elena Sánchez makes use of of those powers that were granted yesterday to the interim presidency of the CRTVE,” they say.
