Santi Amodeo rueda en Súper 16mm 'El cielo de los animales'

Based on the book of the same name by the North American David James Poissant, a collection of stories about loss that the filmmaker transfers to Andalusia, the filmmaker Santi Amodeo (Tranquilo Group) shoots his new film, 'The Sky of Animals', in Seville.

The film stars Raúl Arévalo (Late for anger, The minimal island), Manolo Solo (The good boss, Close your eyes), Jesús Carroza (7 virgins, Model 77), Africa of the Cross (The Gentiles, The Lost Letters), Paula Díaz (The Gentiles, Mamacruz) and the debutant Claudio Portalo.

animal heaven It is the first time that Santi Amodeo adapts another's original story to the screen, in this case, a compendium of stories about loss. "The origin of this film was to understand those Poissant stories as something of my own. Since I read the book I thought about film and, despite the cultural and geographical differences, I naturally imagined it here, in Andalusia. That way of portraying the writer's loss in a resounding and visceral way matched very well with the particular way that we Andalusians have of facing death," explains Amodeo.

On the other hand, some of the stories and atmospheres in the book "took me to places that have always captivated me, like a house among the rice fields of the Guadalquivir or one of those townhouses that proliferated on the coast in the 70s, half empty in winter and bustling in summer," adds the Sevillian filmmaker, who points out as references "the subtlety and restraint" of director Yasujirō Ozu; the cinema of Robert Bresson “and that characteristic way of telling a story in a raw and austere way,” in addition to “the singular, often distant, and always overwhelming atmospheres” of the photographer Maria Svarbova or the comic artists Daniel Clowes and Kazuchi Hanawa.

animal heaven is he séptimo largometraje del director sevillano, responsible for The Pilgrim Factor (2000) with Alberto Rodríguez, Special Mention of the Jury at the San Sebastián Festival; Astronauts (2003), nominated for the Goya for Best New Director and selected among the 10 best European films of 2004 by the critics of Variety magazine; dog head (2006), Best Actor Award at the Shanghai Festival; Who killed Bambi? (2013), una de las diez películas más taquilleras de ese año en España; Yo, mi mujer y mi mujer muerta, que ganó el premio al mejor actor del Festival de Málaga, y Las gentiles (2022), ganadora de dos premios Carmen de la Academia del Cine de Andalucía.

Amodeo, autor también del guion, rueda nuevamente en Súper 16mm, como ya hiciera en su anterior película, Las gentiles, y cuenta con un equipo técnico que atesora numerosas nominaciones y premios Goya, integrado, entre otros, el sonidista Daniel Zayas (Goya for three days), the assembler Jose Manuel Moyano (Goya for The minimal island) o el director de fotografía argentino Leo Hermo (La sudestada, Los que vuelven), con quienes ya trabajó en sus anteriores largometrajes. El rodaje, con una duración de unas seis semanas, se extiende hasta finales de este mes de octubre y tiene lugar, mayoritariamente, en interiores y exteriores naturales de la provincia de Sevilla.

The production

El cielo de los animales está producida por Grupo Tranquilo, fundado en 2016 en Sevilla de la mano de Santi Amodeo y Daniel Pérez Astiárraga. Su primera producción, Yo, mi mujer y mi mujer muerta, ganó el Premio a Mejor Actor en el Festival de Málaga 2019 y se ha estrenado en Uruguay, Argentina (con muy buena respuesta del público), Estados Unidos y Canadá, además de España.

Las Gentiles, su segundo largometraje de ficción, tuvo su estreno mundial en la sección oficial del Festival de Cine Europeo de Sevilla (SEFF) y su estreno internacional, también en la sección oficial a competición, en el Black Nights Festival de Tallin (PÖFF, festival estonio de categoría A). Nominada en 17 categorías, logró dos premios Carmen de la Academia del Cine de Andalucía: Mejor Interpretación Femenina Revelación (África de la Cruz) y Mejor Interpretación Femenina de Reparto (Paula Díaz).

animal heaven has the participation of Channel On y RTVE y con la financiación de la Junta de Andalucía. La distribución corre a cargo de Maravillas Distribuciones Cinematográficas y está previsto que se estrene en otoño de 2024.
