Nikon focuses on cinema with the purchase of 100% of RED
RED, a manufacturer of cinematographic cameras with a wide presence throughout the world, has been purchased by the Japanese firm Nikon, which is thus committed to launching itself into the technology market aimed at cinematographic fields.
The purchase agreement, pending the satisfaction of certain closing conditions, has been reached as a result of the “mutual wishes” of Nikon y RED to meet customer needs and deliver “exceptional user experiences that exceed expectations.” In this way, RED becomes a filial of Nikon, under a share purchase agreement with James Jannard, its founder, and the Jarred Land, its current president.
Nikon's experience in product development and expertise in image processing, optical technology and user interface, together with RED's expertise in film cameras, including unique image compression technology and color science, will seek the distinctive product development in the professional digital cinema camera market. Likewise, Nikon will take advantage of this acquisition to expand the market for professional digital cinema cameras, which is experiencing rapid growth, building on the networks and business foundations of both companies, “promising an exciting future of product development that will continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in film and video production.”
Since its creation in 2005, RED has been at the forefront of digital cinema cameras, introducing products such as the original RED One 4K to the V-Raptor [X] with its patented RAW compression technology. RED's contributions to the film industry have not only earned it an Academy Award, but have made it the camera of choice for numerous Hollywood productions. In Spain, for example, it was the medium chosen to film the successful The Money Heist of Vancouver Media.
