RAI leads the transition of the Italian television system with the imminent start of broadcasts in DVB-T2 and HEVC
Starting next August 28, as established in the National Service Contract between the Ministry of Business, Made in Italy and RAI – Italian radio and television (Italian public radio and television), a mux of the public radio and television (Mux B) will broadcast exclusively with the DVB-T2 HEVC standard.
Inside this mux, Rai 1 HD, Rai 2 HD and Rai 3 HD will be broadcast nationally in simulcast (always in DVB-T2 HEVC) on channels 501, 502 and 503. On the other hand, the channels Rai Storia, Rai Scuola and Rai Radio 2 Visual will be issued exclusively in this new standard. RAI hopes to offer through this system “more channels and better video quality”, “greater efficiency” in the use of the radio spectrum and “new interactive content and advanced services”.
This transition to DVB-T2 arrives late to the Italian television scene, since it is only a first step to which they will have to progressively join others players Italians. The technology was already ready since 2022, when the Italian authorities They released the 700 MHz band to favor emissions under this standard.
Marco Rossignoli, president of Aeranti-Corallo (asociación italiana que representa a unas 150 televisiones locales), invita a la industria televisiva transalpina a acometer los pasos necesarios para abrazar los entornos DVB-T2 HEVC, given that "at this point, the transition to new technology can no longer be postponed so that local television has adequate transmission capacity to broadcast its programs in high definition." "To date, in fact, with the current DVB-T/MPEG-4 transmissions, the local television station has too little radio space to be able to transmit programs with adequate technical quality. It is necessary to accelerate the transition of the entire Italian television system to the new standard," he asserts.
