Filmin celebrates his coming of age with the ProDocs Honorary Award
The producers association ProDocs has recognized the role of of the movie, an independent film platform that this month celebrates its 18th anniversary, as a connection point between the documentary genre and the public with its Honorary Award.
The entity bases the decision on the commitment that this service streaming has demonstrated since its inception by the dissemination of non-fiction productions, “becoming a channel for connecting this genre with the public.” The recognition, whose honors include the journalist John saved (2023) and the documentary filmmaker Jenny Westergård (2024), took place on Wednesday May 14 during the annual ProDocs party as part of the festival DocsBarcelona.
They have collected the award Juan Carlos Tous, CEO of Filmin and founding partner of the same together with Jaume Ripoll y José Antonio de Luna. “The award is a recognition of our work and reaffirms that streaming is a very important window for the public to access the documentary,” says Tous.
Los three founders of Filmin, “film people,” according to Tous, came from the world of domestic film distribution. At the beginning of the 2000s, they became convinced that the future of the sector was through the Internet and that the same content that they offered in DVD or Blu-Ray format would end up being consumed via streaming. On May 31, 2007 they founded Filmin. Documentaries would become a founding pillar of the platform. "It is not just a sentimental bet," clarifies the CEO of Filmin, "but it is endorsed by our audience and consumer data, which are ultimately what helps us make decisions. Last year we premiered the Oscar-winning 20 days in Mariupol, and this year the also awarded No other land, and have competed at the audience level with many of the most successful fiction films.”
Filmin's penchant for non-fiction has recently been translated into the production of works (at the moment, Oswald, the forger, and the miniseries Terenci: the infinite fabulation) and support for titles such as the winner of a Goya As long as it's you. Another of its strategies involves purchasing films from the beginning of their commercial life to promote them in theaters, festivals or film clubs, and in this way generate notoriety and media interest prior to the premiere on Filmin.
