“Smart Insights”: LaLiga will enhance the narration of its matches with AI in real time
LaLiga y Sportian jointly develop the new “Smart Insights” solution, an artificial intelligence system that converts advanced game data into “insights automated historical events”, allowing the broadcasts to be enriched by comparison with historical LaLiga plays and events.
The tool, premiered in the semifinals of the Play-Offs de LaLiga Hypermotion, analyzes simultaneously historical data and live events of LaLiga matches to identify patterns, trends and situations comparable within the game. The system is initially designed to assist commentators during broadcasts, providing them with automated information in real time through specialized and encrypted Telegram channels.
Los insights related to goals are generated in less than a minute after the action has occurred, while others Contextual and match similarity analyzes They are activated at different predefined moments of the encounter. This system allows broadcast professionals to have data advanced and historical references immediately, helping to enrich the narrative with differential and contextualized information.
After a first phase focused on LaLiga Hypermotion commentators, the project roadmap includes future evolutions aimed at the creation of a “Content Hub” for the self-consumption of advanced content by different business areas and stakeholders of LaLiga, and the possibility of incorporating the system into LaLiga EA Sports.
Three AI models to improve match narration
The solution is structured on three large specialized AI models, each one focused on a specific dimension of the party. Goal similarity analyzes each goal considering multiple contextual variables: player position, type of shot, shot area, tactical situation or goalkeeper location, among others. Thanks to this, Smart Insights is able to identify similar historical goals within the LALIGA database and generate automatic narrative comparisons.
The second model, Match Similarity, compares complete real-time game dynamics with similar historical encounters. To do this, it analyzes aggregate metrics such as possession, shots, cards, fouls, pace of the match or offensive efficiency. Based on these patterns, the system can offer probabilistic context on how similar matches tend to evolve: frequency of draws, close victories, goals, or specific behaviors of certain teams in equivalent scenarios.
Finally, Context metrics places the performance of players and teams within a historical context through rankings, percentiles and advanced comparisons. The tool evaluates offensive, defensive, disciplinary metrics and goalkeeper actions to detect outstanding performances in real time. In this way, commentators can quickly contextualize whether a player is achieving one of their best historical records or whether a team is achieving exceptional levels of performance compared to the competition.
