The appointment follows the resignation of George Entwistle earlier this month after just 54 days in the role.

Tony Hall, until now the senior executive of the Royal Opera House and who was in charge of news at the BBC, returns to the British broadcaster in this case as the new general director. Hall was responsible for the launch of BBC News Online, as well as Radio 5 Live, BBC News 24 and BBC Parliament.

The appointment follows George Entwistle's resignation earlier this month after just 54 days in the job.

Entwistle resigned on November 10 after a program report BBC Newsnight mistakenly accused a former British politician of child abuse.

Chris Patten, the president of the BBC Trust (the independent body that oversees the British corporation) has assured that Hall is “the right person to lead the BBC out of its current crisis.”

"The main challenge will be to restore our reputation with the public. I hope you all will support Tony Hall as he carries out that important work," Patten added.
