Columbus: the mother of all mobile units

La flamante nueva unidad móvil de Gearhouse en América, que estos días ha estado desplazada a Las Vegas con motivo de NAB, sorprende por una interesante distribución que optimiza al máximo el espacio, un diseño cuidado al máximo y una ingeniería elevada a arte.

Quienes se han acercado estos días en NAB 2017 a la zona expositiva exterior habrán quedado con la boca abierta al entrar en Columbus, la nueva unidad móvil totalmente en 4K de Gearhouse USA. Diseñada junto al equipo de ingenieros de Gearhouse en Reino Unido sorprende por una interesante distribución que optimiza al máximo el espacio, un diseño cuidado y una ingeniería elevada a arte. Es de destacar que Gearhouse es una de las grandes empresas de servicios audiovisuales presente en los más grandes acontecimientos deportivos como Mundiales o Juegos Olímpicos donde dar soporte a clientes como ESPN, CBS Sports, NBC o Red Bull.

La nueva unidad móvil está carrozada sobre un camión de 18 metros de largo por 5 de ancho (una vez desplegada la petaca) y se ha diseñado pensando en la retransmisión de grandes acontecimientos deportivos y espectáculos a lo largo de toda América. La móvil puede desplegarse mediante un control remoto en su totalidad gracias a un sistema hidraúlico en apenas cinco minutos.

Bienvenidos al espacio

Uno de los aspectos que más llama la atención es la flexibilidad con la que se ha diseñado y construido. La Columbus es mucho más que una unidad móvil ya que Gearhouse pretende que sea la unidad que el cliente desearía tener según las exigencias de cada producción.

The first thing that draws attention is its distribution since unlike what is usually the case in large mobile units where it is located on the side, in this case we find it at the bottom of the unit with a monitoring system (completely in 4K) that retracts when the pack is closed. This has freed up enough space so that the professionals in charge of the repetition or graphics servers... have a space to which they are not accustomed. It has also allowed the audio control to be designed in a room completely acoustically isolated from the main control.

In Columbus every detail counts and so, for example, all the lighting is dimmable and color selectable, creating the desired atmosphere at all times.

On the other hand, optimization of the space of the Columbus has made it possible to include a secondary control that allows the signal to be prepared for second languages, personalizations, streaming or IMAG, for example.

Thanks to the VSM control system of the German manufacturer Theirs, the versatility of the unit is assured, providing operators with a high degree of flexibility and ease of use. The flexibility provided by Lawo's VSM control system allows you to instantly reassign audio and video sources and configure monitoring using a simple tablet via WiFi

With VSM, users have access to the parameters and routing of matrices, multiscreens, mixers... Using VSM panels, operators can prepare complete workflows before a production and retrieve them at any time depending on the type of production just a few minutes before going on air with the push of a button.

The installation has three Lawo V_pro8 Lawo 8-channel video processors that allow the interconnection of different video formats, as well as audio management, frame synchronization and audio embedding and de-embedding in 4K signals.

The Columbus can work with 16 cameras Sony HDC-4300 4K/HD or Hitachi SK-HD1200 and has the capacity to, if necessary, add six RF cameras or another four Sony HDC-4300.

The unit has a mixer Grass Valley Kayenne with a K-Frame of 128 inputs and 48 outputs. An Imagine Communications Platinum IP3 matrix with 460x720 HD SDI inputs/outputs, 45 multi-screen signals, 18 MADI inputs and 22 MADI outputs is responsible for channeling all the signals.

For replays and recording, Gearhouse has relied on four servers EVS XT4 (prepared for 4K) along with other systems from the Belgian manufacturer such as XFile, IP Director 3 or various HD/SSD ISOs.

Audio

De cara a satisfacer las necesidades más exigentes en grandes conciertos y acontecimientos musicales, la unidad ha cuidado al máximo el audio confiándole gran parte del equipamiento a Lawo. El corazón es una consola Lawo mc² 56 junto a un panel w/XT que ofrece 64 faders con 12 capas, o lo que es lo mismo un total de 768 faders con monitorización para 5.1 y estéreo.

La consola junto a una matriz de 4096×4096, totalmente preparada para AES 67, permite trabajar con señales analógicas, AES, MADI y Ravenna. La consola brinda 540 canales de procesamiento, 64 E/S de AES en el núcleo principal con 32 MADI y 4 interfaces de Ravenna/AES67.

De la intercomunicación se encarga una matriz RTS Adam with MADI and RVOn interfaces. The four-way wireless communication chosen is a Clearcom Freespeak 2, with 20 fully assignable point-to-point beltpacks.
