Panasonic releases the technical specifications of the new AU-EVA1 compact camera

Panasonic ha revelado las principales especificaciones de su nueva cámara compacta para cinematografía digital AU-EVA1 5.7K. Prevista para su lanzamiento el próximo otoño, la cámara saldrá al mercado a un precio de 7.495 dólares (7.290 euros).

Con una resolución de 5720 x 3016 (17,25 millones) contará con unos valores de ISO nativos de 800 y 2.500, y 14 paradas de rango dinámico.

That means 4K videos recorded on the camera will be clearer with rich color information. And the 14 stops of dynamic range capture a broad spectrum of exposure detail.”

The new EVA1 sensor is Super-35 size (24.60 mm x 12.97 mm) with a resolution of 5.7K. With an active resolution of 5720 x 3016, the EVA1 delivers more than 17.25 million photosites, almost double the 8.8 million of 4K DCI (4096 x 2160). Starting with a higher native resolution, the 5.7K sensor produces a higher resolution image when upsampled to 4K, UHD, 2K, or even 720p. Additionally, increased color information results in a finer, more accurate finished image.

Native dual ISO

A key feature of VariCam cameras, native dual ISO uses a process that allows the sensor to be read in a fundamentally different way, extracting maximum information without degrading the image. This results in a camera that can switch from standard to high sensitivity with almost no increase in noise or other artifacts. Dual native ISO has allowed cinematographers a greater variety of artistic options, as well as the ability to use less light on set, saving time and money. On the EVA1 the two native ISOs will be 800 and 2,500, allowing camera operators to shoot in almost any lighting environment.

Weighing only 1.2 kilos (body only) and with a compact design (17 x 13.5 x 13.3 cm diameter) and a removable grip, the EVA1 can be used for effective handheld shooting applications. This compact design will allow the camera to be mounted, for example, on a drone, boom or gimbal rig, achieving complex and smooth camera movements. On the other hand, Panasonic is currently working with accessory manufacturers to allow for greater customization with the EVA1.

The adjustable grip includes several controls, including menu, recording start/stop, iris, and two user buttons. The EVA1's LCD screen is a 3.5″ touch panel that allows you to comfortably select from the menu, magnification (image zoom) and playback controls. The LCD has adjustable backlight control, including a mode for brighter viewing conditions.

An integrated ND filter wheel at 2, 4 and 6 stops will allow precise exposure control. The EVA1 also allows the IR Cut to be moved out of path to the sensor with the push of a button. Unique photo effects and night vision images will now be easier with this infrared control.

The ND filter and IR Cut work electronically, allowing wireless remote control from smartphones and tablets. EVA1 will have a remote control app for a tablet (iOS, Android) that will allow users to control the camera when it is on a camera crane or in a remote location.

The camera will record to inexpensive and readily available SD cards. With two SD card slots, you can capture images with simultaneous recording (simultaneous dual recording).

Formats and compression

The camera can record in various formats and compression speeds, offering up to 10-bit 4:2:2 even in 4K. Allows you to capture in 4K (4096 x 2160), UHD (3840 x 2160), 2K (2048 x 1080), Full HD (1920 x 1080) and HD (1280 x 720). In a future firmware update, EVA1 will offer all Intra compressions for in-camera recording and 5.7K RAW output to third-party recorders.

For high-speed capture, the EVA1 will offer up to 59.94fps/50fps for 4K/UHD, up to 120fps/100fps for 2K/Full HD, or 240fps/200fps (cropped area). In the first version, available bitrates will range between 8Mbps and 150Mbps, depending on frame rate, resolution, and codec. In a future firmware update, 400Mbps recording will be added.

As a professional video production tool, EVA1 contains several professional imaging tools, including Peak, Zoom, Waveform, Zebra and Spotmeter (Y-Get).
