The University of Cambridge also signs up for the 2018 Virtual Reality Observatory
Within the OVR18 panel of speakers, in addition to the “honorary speaker” Evelyn Miralles, the person responsible for NASA's Virtual Reality program, there will be the Córdoban researcher María Pérez Ortiz, currently at the University of Cambridge.
In addition to the NASA, the Cambridge University will also be present in the second edition of the Virtual Reality Observatory (OVR18), which will take place on July 18 and 19 at the Malaga Digital Content Hub and in which the present and future of Virtual Reality (VR, AR, MR, 360, eSports, Video Games, Serious Games...) will be discussed.
Thus, within the panel of speakers, which will have as “honorary speaker” Evelyn Miralles, the person responsible for NASA's Virtual Reality program, today it is announced that the researcher from Córdoba Maria Perez Ortiz, currently at the University of Cambridge, will be another of the stars of the event.
María Pérez Ortiz is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Cambridge and Hughes Hall College. His main field of research is Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and their impact on society. But he is also developing scientific work related to Virtual Reality, which he will talk about at OVR18.
Among her scientific achievements, this young Andalusian researcher, who has already been awarded by the BBVA Foundation, has worked on a revolutionary system based on artificial intelligence that helps predict the compatibility between organ donors and recipients.
The researcher from Córdoba will tell her first-person experience as a foreign researcher in the United Kingdom at the Virtual Reality Observatory 2018 (OVR18). María will present the project on machine learning that she is currently working on and which aims to better understand human visual perception.
According to María Pérez Ortiz, "the applications of machine learning in Virtual Reality are many. If we manage to create a model of how the normal observer perceives the environment (for example, color) we can better represent what he sees and this will have a great impact on the simulation of virtual environments, making them more realistic."
Ortiz reflects on its application in video games, stating that "for example, right now it is not very clear how to simulate night vision in video games. Furthermore, this model could be customized to the characteristics of the observer and even used to reduce the effect of certain visual deficiencies." His presentation is sponsored by EXTENDA, the Andalusian Foreign Promotion Agency.
The intervention at OVR18 by the American scientist Evelyn Miralles, from NASA, and the Spanish researcher María Pérez Ortiz, from the University of Cambridge, responds to the commitment of Medina Media, event organizer, to give visibility to the role of women in New Technologies.
The OVR is the most important multidisciplinary event held in Spain on these new technologies, and is sponsored, among others, by multinationals such as Samsung and Nokia. Panorama Audiovisual is a media partner of this event.
