A total of 985 projects have participated in the first edition of the program Film Academy Residences, an initiative to help film creators promoted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with the support of the Madrid City Council.
Of the 985 projects presented, 23% come from filmmakers from other countries (United States, China, United Kingdom, Australia, Morocco, Poland, Ukraine, Mexico, Argentina and Brazil, among others) and 38% have been created by women. "The success of this first call confirms the creative potential of our audiovisual industry. The Film Academy thanks the Madrid City Council for its commitment to this program, which we hope will continue in the future and expand to other Spanish cities," stated the presidency of the institution.
After the deadline for submitting applications (last June 14), the committee formed by the production company Belen Atienza, the director and screenwriter Carla Simon, the Colombian filmmaker Rodrigo Garcia, the artistic director of Cineteca Madrid Gonzalo de Pedro y Mariano Barroso, president of the Academy, among other professionals, will select the 15 finalist projects that will benefit from this first edition, which will take place from September 2019 to June 2020.
Film Academy Residencies will provide 15 emerging or professional filmmakers (directors, scriptwriters or producers), national or foreign, with the necessary means and aid for the development of audiovisual projects related to the Spanish capital. The headquarters of the institution will be the space in which this program will be carried out, which will offer a monthly financial contribution to the creators; support for travel expenses for those residents who live outside the community of Madrid; mentoring advice, physical work space, immersion in the Academy's activities; and permanent meeting with the industry.
The finally selected projects will be announced next August.
