Coinciding with the presence of Hispasat in IBC 2019 in Amsterdam, Saul Marrero, in the Business and Marketing department, addresses in this interview the new challenges that the satellite operator is addressing, such as the new video on demand services via Push VoD satellite or connectivity in 5G mobility environments.

What news does Hispasat come to IBC 2019 with?

This year we come with an innovative service Push VoD satellite video on demand to maritime environments. This technological solution allows telecommunications providers to offer their customers an interesting selection of audiovisual content through their mobile device (tablet, smartphone or laptop) that is stored on the user's device. To receive this signal you simply have to install a small satellite reception antenna and user equipment on the boat. For this demonstration at IBC 2019, Hispasat collaborates with companies Quadrille, Vodomedia y New. Additionally, we show the actual antenna that would be installed on the boat.

On the other hand, Hispasat is broadcasting live its Ultra High Definition television channel Hispasat 4K, available openly in Europe through Hispasat 30W-5. In recent months, Hispasat has included on this channel several short films selected from the finalists and winners of the different editions of the Hispasat 4K International Short Film Festival.

What possibilities does Push VoD via satellite open up? And what download speeds can we handle in a Push VoD service?

He PUSH service video on demand is Aimed at customers without broadband Internet access. Additionally, it can be used in maritime and air mobility environments and can be offered together with a linear TV package. It is not necessary to have Internet connectivity in this service, just install a satellite reception antenna. The contents are sent periodically to users and, depending on the size of the catalog to be transmitted and the resolution of the contents, the contents are renewed periodically according to the operator's needs.

Would it be necessary to adapt the LNB of the satellite dishes to receive Push VOD services?

No, the PushVoD system is fully compatible with traditional DTH installations. An existing DTH customer does not need to make any changes to his antenna for receiving the service. The only change that might be required is to change the customer's decoder to one compatible with linear TV + Push VoD services.

What possibilities for collaboration does satellite present with new high-speed transfer networks such as 5G?

The capacity of the new HTS and VHTS satellites It is far superior to that offered by traditional satellites, allowing high-capacity satellite services to be provided at a lower cost (up to 10 times). Furthermore, the satellite provides a differential value to 5G networks, such as universal coverage and speed of deployment. This satellite value proposition makes it an ideal means of offering connectivity in mobility environments (trains, planes, vehicles, boats...) with the ability to transmit the same content throughout its coverage; or to offer cellular backhaul solutions to mobile operators, decongesting the traffic generated by Base Stations, which will allow operators to accelerate deployment in currently underserved areas. In short, the satellite industry is ready for 5G and, of course, at Hispasat we are.
