The CortoEspaña Itinerant Festival recognizes the best short films of very varied genres and themes with the Fugaz Awards.

Short Spain

Audiovisual products are adapting to the tastes of viewers, who increasingly demand shorter stories. The case of the short film, which is gaining more strength than ever and has more followers every day, is good proof of this.

Every year, more than one hundred Spanish municipalities screen the most outstanding audiovisuals from the Fugaz Awards for Spanish short films in the Short Traveling FestivalSpain. This year, the works are starring stars such as Leonor Watling or Pedro Casablanc and directed by filmmakers such as Carlota Pereda or Eduardo Casanova.

The short films belong to diverse genres and deal with very varied themes: narratives that develop during the transition, peculiar historical interpretations, social demands, unique romances... Solid stories that satisfy all appetites and that have the exceptional execution of the best short filmmakers in Spain.

The CortoEspaña Traveling Festival celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. During this decade, the short film promotion and exhibition platform has organized more than 1,000 screenings and has reached more than 150,000 viewers. Samuel Rodriguez, co-director of Premios Fugaz and the CortoEspaña Itinerant Festival, points out that "the level of short films in our country is very high. Only in the last 15 years, 7 Spanish short films have been nominated for the Oscars. The short film has long ceased to be that field of student practice and has become the ideal format for telling stories in this timeless society."

At the same time, the Fugaz Awards They are the most important Spanish short film awards and the only ones voted for by a large commission of more than 400 short film professionals. Its third edition, held in May 2019 in Room 25 of Kinépolis Madrid with more than 1,000 seats, doubled the capacity of attendees for the second consecutive year and demonstrated, once again, the formidable health of the short format.

A la edición de 2019 se presentaron 678 short films which, according to the rules, had to last less than 30 minutes and be made by short filmmakers of Spanish nationality. Most of the works that were presented are in Spanish and there were audiovisuals from more than 25 languages. The autonomous communities with the highest participation were Madrid, Andalusia and Catalonia.

The awards were widely distributed among all the nominees: 18 statuettes were awarded that rewarded all the aspects involved in the creation of a short film, in addition to two tribute awards that went to the figures of Daniel Sánchez Arévalo and Asunción Balaguer for their professional careers closely linked to the short format.
