This is how ‘Blind Love’ was shot in 5.9K full frame and HDR using the Lumix S1H and the Atomos Ninja V
The short film demonstrates the incredible capabilities of shooting 5.9K RAW in full frame and HDR with the popular Panasonic camera together with a Ninja V recorder.
Polish cinematographer Krzysztof Sieniawski has rolled Blind Love, a short film filmed in a single day in 5.9K Apple ProRes RAW, using the camera Lumix S1H of Panasonic in a basic configuration next to a Ninja V recorder from atoms.
Sieniawski is quickly establishing himself as a promising filmmaker capable of creating incredible work with limited resources. His team's latest historical documentary recently premiered on the History Channel and, surprisingly, was made for just $120,000, using Panasonic's Lumix GH5 with Atomos recorders.
"I loved working with the S1H and the Ninja. It really fits our style of fast filmmaking. But it was the image quality that surprised me. I was very impressed with the colors and latitude that the 5.9K ProRes RAW files gave me in post-production. The image is clean even when shooting at high ISO in RAW, unlike other systems I've tried. I'm looking forward to using it on a full-length production in the near future," says Sieniawski.
The Ninja V and Lumix S1H offer users the ability to record 4K 10-bit ProRes video for quick turnaround projects, or the impressive ProRes RAW de 5.9K 12 bits full frame directly from the camera sensor for greater creative flexibility. Combined, they become an option to take into account to offer the best HDR possible.
The Ninja V will support Lumix S1H 5.9K ProRes RAW recording with the free AtomOS 10.5 update. For its part, Panasonic will release a free firmware update on its Lumix Global Customer Support website. Both updates will be available in the coming weeks.
A stunning 12-bit RAW
Ninja V captures highly detailed 12-bit RAW files from the S1H over HDMI up to 5.9K/29.97p in Full-frame, or 4K/59.94p in Super35. These raw files are extremely clean, preserving the maximum dynamic range, color accuracy and every detail of the S1H. The resulting ProRes RAW files allow for greater creativity in post-production with perfect skin tones and easily matched colors, ideal for both HDR and SDR (Rec.709) workflows.
The combination of the S1H and Ninja V has unique advantages. Panasonic's years of experience in mirrorless camera design give the camera a state-of-the-art image stabilized sensor with dual native ISO technology, superior ergonomics, an electronic viewfinder, good battery life, audio options and multiple lens options thanks to the versatile L-mount. Combined with the Ninja V, the camera is perfectly suited for handheld, shoulder-mounted, gimbal, Steadicam, in-vehicle or even underwater setups.
As for Ninja V, it allows users accurately monitor RAW signal on its 5″ HDR screen with 1000nit brightness visible in daylight. Setup is simple when the camera connects with perfectly adjusted color settings applied automatically. Users can then view the RAW image accurately in HDR in a selection of HLG and PQ (HDR10) formats.
The Ninja V offers touchscreen access to tools like waveforms, 1-1 magnification, and focus peaking, allowing you to perfect your RAW video. The Ninja V then writes the ProRes RAW data to a removable AtomX SSDmini or other SSD drive. Once recording is complete, the drive is removed and connected to a computer via USB for immediate downloading and editing.
