Genelec - JMC Academy - Sydney - The Ones

Two of the recording and post-production studios of the JMC Academy of Sydney have been renovated with The Ones smart active monitoring solutions from Genelec.

The new campus studies JMC in Sydney were redesigned from scratch by the architect Shaun Carter and the interior designer Julie Niass, who proposed a main study with audio immersive and a second study adjacent with stereo setup. To meet this challenge, and at the same time ensure that the equipment would last for many years (given the longevity required by educational institutions), the engineer Glenn Leembruggen of Acoustic Directions proposed to integrate the series The Ones of Genelec. The project finally became a reality with the help of Genelec's Australian distributor, Studio Connections.

Around a console SSL Duality of 48 canales, the design team opted for 8361A monitors wall mounted in positions LCR, with a couple of 8351B straddling the console bridge like nearfields stereo. To support these monitors, some 8340A for the rear and a 7360A for the subwoofer. Paul Newcomb, business development director of Studio Connections, do not hesitate to praise this configuration, which will allow students to “work on post-production video mixes” with “incredible sonic performance.” The second studio was equipped with a pair of Genelec 8351B, also mounted on the wall.

Flexible calibration

Due to the diversity of mixes and applications in each studio, the design team calibrated the entire installation with speaker management software GLM of Genelec, fully optimizing each monitor for the room and allowing users to switch between monitors and maintain precise control of listening levels in each studio. Newcomb provides more details: "The GLM always plays an important role in the sound of monitors. Every space is different, and being able to automatically calibrate the monitor so that it sounds neutral within any room is a real advantage."

The final result has impressed to the JMC team, as Newcomb emphasizes: "For students, facilities like the JMC Academy are often the first time they experience a professional recording environment. JMC has provided them with a great opportunity to learn their craft using monitors that tell the truth, always speaking in terms of sound. We are confident that their experience will be positive."
